Title: Knifton's of Kent
Post by: matgeorges on Wednesday 20 November 13 13:37 GMT (UK)
The Knifton's originate in Darbyshire as I have an ancestor, Charles Knifton,  who was in Canterbury in the 1700's I wondered how he arrived in Kent. One possible answer is he was in the militia as they do have army members in the family. He could have been born about 1740. As I do not know which militia unit he was in in order to search the records at Kew how do I proceed now. :D

I assume that you are referring to Charles who christened a child in Canterbury mid 1760's - do you have evidence of him being born/married in Derbyshire

Just spotted marriage in Canterbury
Charles Knifton
Mary Taylor
11 Apr 1762
Saint George The Martyr,Canterbury,Kent

Have you seen this marriage entry in case it gives any additional information

Many thanks for your reply. I do have Charles's marriage it is his birth cira 1730/40 which I do not have. As I cannot find his birth in Canterbury I have assumed he arrived from somewhere in Derbyshire. I have found  a baptism on 30 Jan 1736 Tickehall, Derbyshire but I have no prove this is him. :D

There is also this marriage in nearby Hackington, are you able to link that to your family in case they are siblings
