Title: Where did Murdoch Macdonald die in 1888?
Post by: Ken Cameron on Wednesday 20 November 13 08:55 GMT (UK)
Found and bought his death certificate from Victoria. Can't decipher where he died although I know it is near Wycheproof. I include three extracts from portions of the certificate to see if anyone can tell me whether it is the name of his farm/homestead or village/town. The district is either Bunguluke or Bungeduke, I'm not sure which.

I have been trying to find the marriages of his three eldest daughters, Catherine, Christina and Margaret, but with no luck so far. It would seem that no one with a father named Murdoch married in Victoria between 1855 and 1888.

The signature is of Annie McDonald his youngest daughter at the age of 21, according to the death certificate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This looks like his death however the age is not a match.  Info on death certs only as accurate at the knowledge of the informant.

McDONALD Murdoch
Father Donald  Mother Kate MORRISON
At Bunguluke  86 years  1888 Reg#12445

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunguluke,_Victoria

According to my resource there is a Murdoch McDONALD buried in the Wycheproof cemetery however the other McDONALD names on the database do not appear to be the same family.

The certificate for Murdoch's death would list all the information about his marriages and children both living and deceased.
Cando

Ken you keep saying you found the death...however you did have help ;D

It is a rural area and may be a Parish Hundred.  Deaths are registered in Districts and may not be the exact place of death.  What is the name of the District at the top of the registration?

The indexes in Victoria do not give the names of the parents on the marriage indexes.

Search for Ninyeunook, Vic 3540 on google maps.  Probably similar to the area I live in.  We have a post code but no services at all.  Just a tin shed that is a registered post office where each family in the district has a key to access their mail boxes.

Hi folks.

Once again great work and much faster replies than on my first search. I include an attachment of Murdoch’s complete death certificate for your perusal. The last two columns are interpreted below:
Where and at what age and to whom –
1 Scotland
and
1 Adelaide;
2 Not Known (should be abt 8, Murdoch and Mary Cameron were married on 4 Mar 1845)
2 48 years (corrected by registrar to 45 on cert);
3 Not Known (should be Mary Cameron),
3 Kate Swan (should be Catherine McSwan).

Issue, in order of birth, their names and ages:
By First wife
Kate 40 yrs.
Christina 38 yrs.
Margaret 35 yrs.
Donald dead (died in Cork, Ireland on board HMS Hercules 14 Feb 1853)
By second wife:
Johanna 30 yrs.
Donald 27 yrs.
Mary/May? 26 yrs.
Annie? Dead
Annie 21 yrs.
Samuel dead.

This is definitely my ancestor Murdoch from North Uist as too much of the info on the certificate ties in with data from other sources. Missing or inaccurate info I put down to Annie not knowing for some reason as it was before she was born. This would suggest that she was not in a position to ask her older siblings, or that they could not remember either. Why her mother did not know/remember is a bit more puzzling.

Murdoch seems to have a constant problem with his age even before leaving North Uist. He remained 40 years old for a number of years when he was in reality 35/39 in 1851. I found him in the 1841 Census at age 25, which means that he was between 25 and 29 years old then (they rounded down to the nearest 5 in that Census). He gave his age as 40 in the 1851 Census and was recorded as 40 on HMS Hercules in 1853. He married Catherine McSwan on 2 Aug 1853 at Adelaide and died 9 Oct 1888, which means that he was about 45 years old when he married for the second time and the Registrars correction should be the trusted figure.

Cando, thank you for your invaluable assistance once more and to all the others over there in Oz who have helped my search. I have contacted the Stawell group three times. The first was very kindly replied to by the then ex-Secretary at that time, and he passed my request for help on to the present Secretary along with giving me the new secretary’s name. I did not get any reply, so after a few months I sent a further request to them and have had no reply at all (4 months), not even an automated email reply. So either my emails have gone to the wrong place, or that group is having some sort of troubled times at the moment. It looks like a case of try, try, again, again. That’s life.

Kind regards
Ken

Folks, I have now traced all information on the lives of Murdoch, Catherine and Margaret McDonald in Victoria, their husbands and children also. The only child I have not a complete record of is Christine McDonald.
Many thanks to everyone that answered my early questions on this family. If anyone can shed light on the marriage of Christina in Victoria it would be greatly appreciated.

If indeed it is the right couple, it was not always a happy marriage.

Christina struggled without support. 1884

She was still without support here in 1885

But by the time Jacob died, relations were seemingly warmer. 1908.

Robert and Frances LINKLATER arrived in 1852 per "James T Foord" with their 11 year old son Jacob.
Robert was a labourer.
They paid their own way and were from Orkney. Destination Geelong.

Cass and Sue fabulous work. As you can see from this post, I have been working on this for years and you both have given me the last information I needed in less than 24 hours. Great work and many many thanks for the support. I never found any hint of Linklater in my own researching as Christy McDonald is a very common name in North Uist and Christy translates into a myriad of derivatives there. I had many false leads on her in Australia and none of them came to fruition. Her mother was Mary Cameron my great great great aunt. Christina was the last child of Mary’s that I had yet to trace.
