Title: Help with address: "Shandon", Leinster Road West, Rathmines, Dublin
Post by: canberraterry on Tuesday 19 November 13 00:45 GMT (UK)
I have a number of postcards addressed to Smith family members at the above address from 1903 to 1905, but nothing I have been able to find indicates where Shandon was. I assume that Shandon was just the name of a house.

My questions of anyone who might know the area are:

(1) Does Leinster Road West still exist?

(2) Is there a house still standing with the name Shandon?

(3) Is there any other way that I might find out what street number it (the house) was? (The census returns for 1901 and 1911 have not been useful as the family moved to Shandon probably in 1903 and left probably around 1907)

If you put 'Leinster Road West' into GoogleMaps  it shows the road still there (off Harold's Cross Road)
It's not that long a street so if you drag the little orange man on the left side onto the map you can 'walk;' up and down the road. Looks like there have been just a few changes since the early 1900s. The most likely place for a house name to be displayed there is above the door (only a few houses do so, most have the number there) but the name could have changed or been removed.
There are valuation revision books that would list changes in ownership/occupancy but the ones for Dublin are not online and I see from your location a trip to the archives here isn't likely to be an option.

There is a baptism record for a child to a John Fisher citing that address in 1874:

What might be worth a go is for someone reading this thread with access to street directories to check for Smith in Leinster Road West from 1903 - 1907 or for Fisher in or around 1874.

Thank you all so much for this help. I feel that I am getting closer to my family.

Looking at the Census information and the Fisher baptism record I see that there was a Fisher family living at house no 21 in Leinster Road West, whereas Shandon was apparently at no 24.

I have a similar apparent issue with the 1911 census return for William Smith, the eldest son of the Shandon family, who apparently lived at 36 Annesley Park according to the census return, but we have post cards from 1907 addressed to the family at 23 Annesley Park. This could be explained by the family moving, but in view of the Fisher addresses, I wonder if my assumption that the house number on the census forms is actually the street number is correct.

Is the house number on the census return the actual street number as I have assumed?

Hasta,

Thanks. I have been unable to find anything on Google. Can you provide a link to the ads? I am really looking for a photo if there is one on any of the ads.

Thank you eadaoin.

The Smith at 24 was a Samuel John who is currently unknown to my family, but since it appears that Shandon is No 24, and there are not a lot of Smiths in that area, it seems a huge coincidence that another Smith, also a Primitive Methodist, should be living there in 1911 and 1922, unless there is a family connection.

We know that my great grandmother Isabella Smith was living at 37 Kildare Street in 1894 the year before  her husband died, that when he died they were living at 1 Lower Fitzwilliam Road, and that they left there for Shandon at some stage after her husband died in 1895. Various members of her family were certainly receiving mail at Shandon from 1903 to 1907. I also "know" from a Boys Brigade souvenir booklet from the 1940s that my then twenty year old grandfather moved from somewhere in the parish of St Anne's to Charleston Road Methodist Church in Rathmines in 1898. So maybe Samuel and family took Isabella and family in? If so, I have a whole new avenue of family history to explore.

Thanks again,
Terry

No it's the number of the form the census return is filled in on. Don't pay it any attention.

Hello again aghadowey,

I have had no luck with GoogleMaps but I think I may have struck paydirt with Google Earth. I found a very run down house of an appropriate age which Google Earth says is No 11, but which has a wheelie bin in the front yard with a prominent 24 painted on its side.

Thank you again for your help.

Hi - I can't give you a link as the newspaper sites are all subscription, and won't show up on Google.
There was no picture of the house I'm afraid.

This Smith family in No 24 in the census are definitely at No 24 in real life as the little girl Dorothy is mentioned a lot winning singing competitions up to 1928 with an address at 24 Leinster Rd W. I'll have another look later

Thanks Hasta. Much appreciated.

This is the house in Leinster Road West with the 24 painted on the side of the wheelie bin. It had obviously been unloved for a while when Google took this shot in June 2009

Terry

P.S. But if Fisher stated his address as Shandon, and other records show him at 21, then this is obviously not the house. Shandon must be 21 after all. And 21 Leinster Road West is attached below.

Thank you all who helped me find my family's old home. It means a lot to me.

Glad you were able find and 'see' the house but Google images are subject to copyright and can't be posted here.

Hello Aghadowey,

Please accept my apologies: I was on a real high at the time after finding it at last.

Have a look at the OSI Mapviewer to see the area on older maps
http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,591271,743300,0,10

Use search to find the street and than click the historic 25 and 6 for old maps.
