Title: Where might I find military records for Adam Alexander Private 416929 A.S.G.
Post by: allesond on Sunday 17 November 13 22:08 GMT (UK)
Private 416929 A.S.G. is listed as Adam Alexander's profession on Marriage cert January 16, 1919. His address was 49 Stafford Street & his wife Alice Fox's address was 121 Richmond Row Liverpool. Adam's father's name was John Alexander (Farmer), his mother was Mary or Maria.

I assume A.S.G. is Scots Guards, but can find nothing on Ancestry or the National Archives.

Any help is appreciated,
Best Regards,
Alleson

Could ASG actually be ASC - Army Service Corps?

I can't see any medal card for him, but if he didn't see any overseas service then he wouldn't be eligible for any medals. When was he born?

Yes, it absolutely could and most probably is A.S.C. with the little loop on the bottom.

I only have a marriage cert, which lists him as 37 years old and a Catholic Marriage record from St. Mary of the Angels, which lists an address of 110 Soho St. Liverpool.
The witnesses are:
Teresa Walsh 43 Hahnemann Rd Walston and
Georio Davies of The Friary Fox St. Liverpool.

I figured he or his parents were b. in Scotland (assumption because I could not find a birth record for Adam); therefore Scots Guards. My best bet for more information is from service records, but none are forthcoming at this time.

Thanks so much for your direction.

Hi

Ancestry has 9 images of his Service Record. It looks like he only signed up in on the 6th Sept 1918 and he was 39 yrs and 9 months, according to the forms he was living at 9 Stanley St, Warrington and he married Alice Fox in Dublin 26th Dec 1914. It might be worth checking if that was true or not.

Thank you Andy, but where and how did you find this, the only Adam Alexander that comes up in Ancestry.co.uk military records that I can find have 37 images and he is married to a Constance and is a Sargent?

Hi

I searched using the service number only but I now notice that Ancestry has his name the wrong way around, Alexander Adam.
I had a quick look for a marriage in Ireland but couldn't see one, possibly that information was a fib, I have certainly found that in Scotland, where details of parents marriage is included on childrens birth registration, that people allegedly married some distance away but such marriage can't be found. Maybe when asked for verification they decided to marry in Liverpool.
With the mention of Dublin there is a good chance they were Irish

Andy that is too much of a coincidence. Alice Fox was b. in Dublin and on her baptism record in the far edge is sketched married Adam Alexander Liverpool 1919 and I have both corresponding documents.

This is definitely him with the 416929 record #. I hope to see where he is born, but at least now I can look for descendants based on this information.

Thanks!!!!!

Hi Alleson,

For information, Hahnemann Road is within the Walton area of Liverpool - not Walston as stated.

May just be a typo, but just thought I'd say.

Well, one year has passed and after a legion of searches, I have come no closer to finding any more information on Adam and Alice Alexander. Searched Scotland's People, Roots Ireland, Church Records, Ellis Island records, and all censuses and passenger records on Ancestry.com/co.uk/ca. As well as The National Archives with no luck. I even looked at potential children and none.

Although there are many Adam Alexander's, none with the parents of John and Mary or Maria. I don't know if he was born in Scotland, Ireland, England, or elsewhere, but do know he served in the ASC MT 416929.

1. Would there be any other Service Records on a soldier?  Besides the 41629 # in top left corner is a 21347#
2. Does the National Archives list as Last, First or First, Last Names? Adam Alexander is certainly ambiguous
3. Would there be any records which indicate where a soldier is born, or is it an assumption they are born in England?

Best Regards and thanks for all the help last year.

Just a bit of info. The Alexander family line is also in Norfolk as it is one of my ancestor names.

2 years have passed, many Scotland's People records have been scoured, have searched "all collections" around the globe and have still not connected:
1. Adam Alexander with a father and mother: John and Mary [Joannis & Mariae Alexander] as per Catholic marriage record Aug 1, 1919 Liverpool to Alice Fox
2. Adam Alexander [rank Private 416929] marriage January 16, 1919 to Alice Fox as per GRO. John Alexander [farmer] was still living.
3. Any census with Adam and Alice Alexander, with exception of Canada 1916 census which has the couple immigrating to Canada in 1904 and first child b. in 1906, when Alice Fox would have been 10-12. years old.
4. Any census with a John and Mary as parents to Adam Alexander.

Question: Does the WWI service records show anywhere else where a soldier was born?

Thanks for any more insight.
Alleson

I finally realized that this ASC MT soldier transferred to Z class August 2, 1919 and the other number 21347 is the AFZ service number.

Have you found him in the 1911 census, which would give details of birthplace and, if he is staying with them, his parents?

Yes, but as I have the GRO marriage cert from Jan 1919 for Alice Fox and Adam Alexander and their Catholic marriage record of Aug 1919, I think the Dec 1914 marriage notation is a fib for the army for some reason or other.

Thanks

I did wonder whether it was a fiction to satisfy the army but wondered if it indicated he was actually Irish.

I am liking the dublin marriage to one of: Edith Margaret Reeves, Elizabeth Matilda MacAdam, Anne Morrow, Maria Duffy. I have a Dublin rootschat: Information appreciated for Fox/Shelly & Shelly/Whitty families. There are 14 pages and a few posting have discussed Adam Alexander.

Thanks,

Re: the Adam and Alice Alexander who emigrated to Canada in 1904......

You may have already discounted them but it doesn't appear that they are your couple in any case. The BMD index for Manitoba has the mother's maiden name as Campbell for the children in the 1916 census. There is also a death recorded in 1918 for an Alice Alexander of the correct age. Adam is listed as a widower in the 1921 census.

Thank you that was interesting. Yes discounted as the age and she was busy getting married in 1919.
