Post by: Monivea on Sunday 17 November 13 20:00 GMT (UK)
hi just wondering would anyone have any information on a man called michael kennedy from monivea. He was the son of john francis kennedy and elizabeth newell. apparently he was a bit of a trouble maker and was always fighting, not ideal when your father is the local sargent! The story goes that he left and never returned home again after his father disowned him. i have no dates yet for him of any kind but just wnted to see if this story sounds familar to anyone.
Thanks all!

I'm also researching Kennedys in the area in that time frame, and also a police officer in the family, but he was a constable in the RIC named James Kennedy, wife Anne McGuire (or MaGuire). There is a son Michael, but he's older - born in 1870. Do you have any info about the father's siblings?

You will most likely find him on later American census if he survived war.

Edit or post him on the United States board here on RootsChat.

This is the tricky part with the name "Kennedy" - which one is it exactly. I've sent for the RIC record for James Kennedy. I would like to see who recommended him for service, since it was probably a relative. You could do the same for Michael's father if you are interested. That would tell you places and dates of service, and you can probably find siblings by birth registration. I've found the family memories to be a bit off at best.

Wow! Thank you that is amazing information! Had no clue where to look as didn't know which country he would have gone to. Thanks so much  :)
I also know that his father came from roscommon but didn't look for any siblings as of yet. As far as i know the ric officers were not allowed to serve in there home counties so chances are both our Kennedy came from different parts of the country. Will investigate more!
Thanks again for all the replys  delighted with this new information!

John Francis Kennedy left a will 1919 administered in Tuam to Mary E of Monivea but may not exist because of Custom House fire.

Please note that all men of a certain age were required to fill out draft registration cards, unless they were already in the military.  It does not mean that they were actually drafted or ever served in the military.  I don't see any indication that a Michael Kennedy of his age from New York served in WWI.

A link to the draft registration card is here -

Thank you Shellyesq for defining that for me i am sure Monivea will be delighted with the link, i note he's working for an Aluminium Co,on line 10 of the registration it says single and then what looks like Concaver is this referring to his trade cant quite make out the small print in front of it.

Cheers

dathai,
I will have to wait until I get the records from the RIC to know for sure where he was from originally. I know his children were all born in Galway, but the family story is that they were from Waterford. I'll just have to be patient.

On another topic - does anyone know how to get Boer War service records with birth dates? I can only find names, not even country of origin.

The word you read as Concaver is Caucasian,  referring to his race or colour.

Dathai,
Thank you so much - yes! That is the correct James Kennedy in Claremorris. He was posted there after Galway. I got the records from the RIC. They were incredibly helpful and quick.

Just to tie up the ends on my post - James Kennedy, RIC service no 10996, was born in King's Co. He joined the RIC in 1848 at the age of 19. He was recommended by Sub Inspector James Butler at Shinrone. He was posted to Tynagh, Galway. He married Anne McGuire on Sept. 5, 1854. I've been able to find birth records for 9 of the 11 children (James, Patrick, Edward, Michael, Daniel, Elizabeth, Catherine, Thomas, Joseph) who were born in various towns in Galway, or in Claremorris, Mayo where he was transferred in 1878. I've managed to trace 4 (Michael, Edward, Daniel, Elizabeth) of these 9 and I'm still working on the rest and on finding the missing two.
James and Anne lived in Claremorris until their deaths in 1911 and 1912, respectively. There were some very verbose obituaries for both. They are apparently both buried in the Ballinsmalla cemetery but we've not been able to get a burial record.
