For 2 years I have been looking for my grandmother Janet Grays birth, also information on her husbands family, and getting nowhere. I managed to find a cousin in Scotland who told me that when Janet died her mother found a birth certificate for ....Janet stating that her name was Janet Anderson, not Gray...... Eureka! I found her birth 15thJune 1896. Her father being John Gray Anderson (widower), mother Euphemia Hart (spinster) who married in Rutherglen 7/9/1894 .
He age 38, she 37.
That eureka moment has now vanished as apart from 1901 census I cannot find them on 1911 at all.
Also Johns parents Andrew Anderson and Mary Gray (thats where the Gray came from!) are nowhere to be found on census at all. Mary was not alive at the time of marriage 1894.
If anyone can please help find anything about them I would be grateful, I've probably missed something.

Yes, very possible Trish1120. I've tried Scotlands P so that i can see the original, but nothing comes up. I put in John anderson Age 14-16 Lanarkshire 4 came up. Milton, Blythswood Old Monkton and Tradeston. I them tried Mary Gray and nothing in lanarkshire! Is this usual? on Ancestry but not on S.P.... Maza

On A..y Mary shown as 53, on FindMyPast as 51, and on Scotlands People as 57! They are in Rutherglen.
I searched just for Mary Gray (no age) in Lanark, Rutherglen and 4 come up and she is the one shown as aged 57 (original looks to me like 51 as stated on FindMyPast).

In 1861 Mary Gray is at same address as 1871 i.e. 28 Stonelaw Street, Rutherglen.

Agnes Robertson dau. 19 b. Rutherglen, Lanarkshire
Robert Robertson son 17 ditto
John Gray son 6 ditto
Jane Gray Unm. sister 36 ditto
So, looks like Mary Gray was never actually married although had at least 2 children by a Mr. Robertson, and then John Gray Anderson by a Mr. Anderson (Andrew?).

Yes Mary Gray seems to have been having a gay old time! No marriage found either. Her sister Jane Gray, living with her has been entered as "imbecile" Do you know if this is a specific term, or a general term for "slow"
Janet Gray married James Stoddart. 12/9/1913 Blantyre. Her parents are stated as John Gray and Euphemia Hart. It seems John dropped Anderson and kept his middle name Gray.

Just a thought to ponder on Maza, which may have led to the confusion of the surnames of Gray and Anderson.
Annette posted earlier the 1861 census entry for Mary Gray with two children down as Robertson and John showing as Gray. Mary, mother, was showing as unmarried....
Likely John's birth was illegitimate. Not uncommon for illegitimate children to go by the surname of their reputed father, and often sway around with surnames. In this case you have the use of the name of John Gray Anderson, Gray being mother and Anderson perhaps his reputed father's surname. Not uncommon to do this at that time.
Can't easily see John Gray Anderson's birth on family search so maybe he was born in 1854, the year before the start of official registration in Scotland?

Yes, John Gray Anderson seems to swop between names.
His marriage to Euphemia Hart in Rutherglen 7th Sept 1894 was John Gray Anderson. Father Andrew Anderson, mother Mary Gray.
I found a birth on S.P. for John Anderson 21 June 1855, Rutherglen. But wrong, as his parents were different. This was the only John Anderson I could find b.rutherglen.
It makes me think how easy it is to make a mistake that if I had found this and not his marriage I would have thought it was correct.
