Have you looked at the Cheshire BMD site? There are an awful lot of Machins in Congleton and North Staffs. Have you got dates or names? Have you got your parents' marriage certificate, then you can work back from that? Congleton Museum has something called the 1831 census, when you've got back through the 1841-1911 censuses, good luck claytonbradley

First of all welcome to rootschat and a very rewarding hobby
If you're just starting out its important....indeed would say vital....to follow the time line and not assume that because somebody had the same surname theyre yours....otherwise you can easily bark up the wrong tree so to speak ...its easy enough to go wrong anyway ..and mistakes can be expensive both in time and in money.
So prove each step.....1 generation at a time start with your birth cert...parents marriage..their birth certs , their parents and so on.
then when you get to 1901 you can ask for a look up in the censuses.. and other help..(cant do 1911 census on here). By the way you will accumulate LOTS of bits of paper so need to develop own filing system....
there are lots of helpful folk on this site,
and I hope the above helps you.
Best wishes
Jed
Hope that helps
