Title: can trace family on board but not father
Post by: kingpettey on Friday 15 November 13 16:24 GMT (UK)
Agnus Petty (1832) and family arrived New York 10/12/1863 leaving from Liverpool on the Etna

1870 USA census has them all living at Cincinati Ward 1 Hamilton Ohio

Husband George Petty 1829 Shepton Mallet is with Agnus and family on 1861 census Dowlais Merthy Tydfil Wales so assume he must have left after that but can't see him on passenger list? Where should I look?

Only George Petty I've come across on that ship is  seaman going from USA to USA

Thank you

Ray

Does the 1870 USA census give occupation?  Perhaps he was a seaman.

Thanks, occupation is given as Rolling Mill as does 1880 USA Ohio census

So far as I can gauge father William died pre 1840 - between 1841 - 1851 so far as I can gauge he went with others from Shepton to Wales working on farms.

I did wonder if he worked his passage as a seaman, but the passenger list for George Petty does say USA - to USA rather than England to USA - however his name does follow Agnus and family so?

Thanks _ Ray

Maybe he emigrated before his family then worked his passage back to England, they joined him on board then he worked his way back to USA.  He could then sign off in USA and go back to his normal work.
