Title: Montrose newspapers 1836?
Post by: ayrgenes on Wednesday 13 November 13 18:34 GMT (UK)
I'm trying to trace a couple mentioned on an ornate jug, dated 16th Sept 1836 - Montrose. It isn't an important date ie birth or marriage as I have checked ScotlandPeople and can't find any family connection with this date. It has a picture of a bridge over the River Wear and a poem then the couples names. I'm thinking if it was in Montrose there may be an article in local paper? It would be nice to find out why they got the jug.

You can check old newspapers  on some websites. For Scotland the one owned by  Brightsolid (the owners of Scotlands People) is good  http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk. FindMyPast also give access to old UK papers.

You could try those names in the 1841 census as well.

Thanks for reply.
I have the couples details, I'm just trying to find the reason they have the jug with that date on. Montrose library have films of the local newspapers at that time, so might manage over and search them.

Title: Montrose look-up please!
Post by: ayrgenes on Saturday 16 November 13 18:03 GMT (UK)
Hoping some kind soul could look-up copies of 'Montrose Review' 1836, I believe they are held at Montrose library.

I am interested in a couple John/Agnes Gove, I have knowledge of ornate jug with inscription

'John & Agnes Gove, 16th Sept 1836, Montrose'. + poem relating to sea.

I have checked SP site and this is not a BMD date so thinking maybe it was given as an award or prize? Hoping maybe an article around that date  in paper may explain jug and inscription. John comes from a seafaring family.

Thanks in advance...

I have an Andrew Gove & Mary Ann Strachan married on 14 December 1836 in Inverbervie, in my tree.
Not sure if there is any connection to your John Gove.

This isn't actually my tree, just helping with research. Haven't seen a connection with your Goves though, but do know there are quite a few of them in that area so possible connection somewhere.
