Taking a wild stab  ;D

There is a will on pro-vic http://prov.vic.gov.au/ for an Alfred HOLLOWAY, gold-digger who died in 1841 (20 Mar 1841) from Geelong.   His brother John HOLLOWAY is the executor.  He left William ELLEN and Thomas ELLEN cousins and  his brother John HOLLOWAY in this colony, and a mother and 3 brothers and 3 sisters in Kent, England.

Is this a possibility?

cheers,
   Ros

OK OK  my Victorian geography is poor and I now see that Geelong is some distance from Bendigo but he could have been chasing the gold finds.

Ros, people travelled from all over the world to the gold fields in Victoria. A combination of the gold drying up, and the Californian gold rush starting was the turning point for many to take off then to the US. So Geelong is not that far from Bendigo.  :)

Wasn't gold discovered at Sandhurst [later named Bendigo] in Sep 1851?

May I ask the source of your information?

No goldfields in Aus in 1845. Small finds but the government hushed them up. It wasn't until Hargreaves claimed to discover gold in early 1851 that the rushes started in NSW.

Bendigo was just a little later as Cando says. The rush at Bendigo was in full swing with 20000 diggers on the field by January 1852 from 800 in December 1851.

This link is to a newspaper item titled "BENDIGO SINCE '51 No. I."
Bendigo Advertiser   Saturday 29 September 1888 p 3

The author looks back to earlier days in Bendigo and makes reference to a man Joseph HOLLOWAY .
I see no reference to Joseph's death or anything at all about Robert Walker HOLLOWAY.

I have not come across a newspaper called "Bendigo Gazette", but perhaps you could give more information about the nature of the report of the death of the brothers which you refer to.

These are to only two indexed BDM events I can see up to 1888 pertaining to Joseph HOLLOWAY.

The area would have been known as Sandhurst in 1854 and the only reference I can find to a Bendigo Gazette is a newspaper which was published between 1979-1998.

Could you please type the information as it appears in the publication.

Civil registration was legislated Jul 1856 in the Colony of Victoria although there are civil registrations prior to the date however many of the records are parish records.

PROV has papers for the estate of Joseph HOLLOWAY, of Sandhurst, gentleman, died 22 February 1854.  The Court application states that he has no next of kin in 'this Colony" (i.e. Victoria).

I have the following extracts

From History of Bendigo/Sandhurst by George Mack on line  www. Archive

c1851_1854  Joseph died 1854

It may be difficult for many to believe that the forest between
the First White Hill and our railway station, and, indeed, up
to Golden Gully, was so thick and dark that people often lost
their way in attempting to get through it, from any one of the
points named to another. The range dividing Sandhurst from
Ironbark was so densely timbered that no glimpse of the valley
of Bendigo could be obtained from it, and many robberies were
committed there. Men who ventured to bring their gold into
the township, as Sandhurst was then called, did so at great risk.
Mr Joseph Holloway who used to visit the gullies for the purpose
of buying gold from the diggers, was stuck up one evening on
Ironbark Hill, but being on horseback he got away, and was fired
at twice as he galloped off, though fortunately without effect

Holloway. On the 21st February  1854  at the Government  Camp Sandhurst, Bendigo, after a lingering illness, Joseph the second and last surviving son of the late Joseph Holloway Esq, of East  Leigh  Havant, in the 41st year of his age . About two months earlier, his brother, R. W. Holloway Esq. died at Melbourne  and from the instant he received the melancholy tidings, he may be really said never to have held up his head. Mr Holloway was amongst the earliestt of the colonists who made the over land journey from   Sydney to Victoria, and the writer of these  lines, having been connected with him for many years  and made many long and trying jouneys with him, can testify to his goodness of heart, his generosity and uniformly kind and honorable conduct, and his numerous friends – all who knew him intimately  _ will deeply deplore his loss. His remains were followed to the grave by the Resident Government Commissioner, the Police Magistate, all the Camp officers and a few private friends                         .Bendigo Gazette Feb 23 1854

I can't find the HOLLOWAY in the online book...yet.    Bendigo Gazette may be the Police Gazette.

Have searched the newspapers archived at State Library of Victoria and nothing at all for a Bendigo Gazette in 1854 only the Bendigo Advertiser and Bendigo Evening News [1851-1893]

The Bendigo Advertiser was published from 1853 - 2003 and this newspaper is on TROVE but only from 1855.

May I ask where you found the Bendigo Gazette item?

Great find with an excellent description of Joseph HOLLOWAY's death.

Noting you name and the origin of the HOLLOWAY brothers, I wonder, emsworth, if you and I are cousins-by-marriage - very distant cousins anyway!

I have in my tree a Gawen HOLLOWAY who married my 3G-aunt Martha Ann MIDLANE in 1802 at Brockhampton Chapel.  Martha died at Emsworth in 1808 and is buried at Warblington.  I have access to interesting booklet which is a publication of The Catholic Record Society and includes the registers of the chapel at Brockhampton and the correspondence of the priest.  There are a number of mentions of HOLLOWAYs but I have only photocopied references to my MIDLANE ancestors.  I'm very happy to have another look if you think it would be useful.  I don't want to hijack this thread so PM me if you would like further information.

I see this thread which mentions Gawen as the brother of a Joseph HOLLOWAY.   ::) Looking further I see you have contributed to the thread.

Having stupidly forgotten that this thread was running last year I started another.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=676510.new;topicseen#new

The new thread adds little to this one except a TROVE article which shows that Joseph HOLLOWAY borrowed money - 2000pounds - and died owing about 1300pounds which was not recovered, leaving his guarantor owing the debt.

Thanks for  the information. Poor Joseph! Shot at by bandits  and losing his brother. Presumably he died before making his fortune. £10000 was a huge sum then. Were you interested in Gawen  Holloway he finished up bankrupt too.

The book I have, that I mentioned before, has some recollections as well as the transcripts of BMDs for the RC parish.  I have only photocopied the BMD pages for my MIDLANE family but the biographical section quotes a letter of recollections written by Sister Mary Maurus Corney O.S.B. (dau of Charles F Corney and Susanna Bulbeck), who was brought up in the area. Her address is St Mary's Priory, Princethorpe near Rugby, and the letter is dated May, 1915.

It doesn't seem to fit the known events though.

Emsworth
Of late years there were not many Catholics there.
Mrs Goen? Holloway
Her son died young at Old Hall (or soon after he left it). a Daughter married Mr John Snook of Bedhampton, in the end she and her daughter gave up the church all together (after the new church was built) through shame!

Would this be the marriage referred to? If so the writer of the letter could hardly have known these people personally although I do see a death for Maria Augusta SNOOK (b abt 1807)1889 in Chelsea London.

John Snooks, also indexed as John SNOOKE
Marriage: 9 Jul 1829, Warblington,Hampshire,England
Spouse:    Mary Augusta Holloway

Did Gawen marry again?

Just curious.  :-\
