Title: Arthur Holden
Post by: Suznor on Tuesday 12 November 13 20:02 GMT (UK)
Hi All

I am wondering if anyone can help.  I am researching Arthur Holden who was injured in WWI.  He was injured on 3rd May 1917 and was in the 12th Bn. West Yorkshire Regiment 9th Brigade 3rd Division.  What I would like to know is what battle was he injured in?

Many thanks for any help given.

Regards
SuzNor

The Long Long Trail website might help?
http://www.1914-1918.net/westyorks.htm

If you follow the link for the 3rd Division, the following battles were fought by them in 1917:
1917
The First Battle of the Scarpe**
The Second Battle of the Scarpe**
The Battle of Arleux**
The Third Battle of the Scarpe** in which the Division helped capture Roeux
The battles marked ** are phases of the Battles of Arras 1917
The Battle of the Menin Road***
The Battle of Polygon Wood***
The battles marked *** are phases of the Third Battle of Ypres
The Battle of Cambrai 1917

See http://www.1914-1918.net/bat18.htm which implies that it was the 3rd Battle of the Scarpe?

Hi Suznor,

I have had look & found the following:

All a part of the Arras Offensive 9th April - 16th June 1917.

3rd Division was at this time a part of the 3rd Army under General Allenby.

This is what I can find for the 3rd Division at this time:

The Battle of Arleux, 28th-29th April 1917
The Third Battle of the Scarpe, 3rd-4th May 1917
The Capture of Roeux, 13th-14th May 1917

Here is a link to the page on the Long Long Trail website where I found this information:

http://www.1914-1918.net/bat18.htm

Looking at the war diaries for the 12th battalion West Yorkshire Regiment may help to determine where they were. Here is a link to the diaries for that period Sept 1915 to Feb 1918:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C4554583&isFullDescription=False

They are in amongst several other diaries for other regiments within 3rd Division 9th brigade. Costs £3.36 to download the diaries as shown on the page linked above.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Snap KGarrad, looks like we thought along the same lines! ;D
