I am not new to FH, having been working on both my husband's and my families for a few years now, but I have never been able to find my Granddad Thomas Murray's birth record. He was born in 1882 and in all census returns his birthplace is given as Southport. Their records are part of the Ormskirk Registration District, but there is no trace. In 1881 the family was living in North Meols which is just outside Southport and in the same Ormskirk district, but by the 1891 census they had moved back to Altrincham in Cheshire where his mother was born, and Granddad's name is given as John T or John J? His father has disappeared from the family and is difficult to trace as his name alternates between Walter, Daniel or sometimes both.
Granddad's Military records are also very elusive and I am at my wits end. If I didn't remember him from my childhood, I would be thinking he never existed!
Has anyone any ideas about where else I could look? Parish Registers haven't turned up anything either

Hi,
www.familysearch.org have a christening 25 Oct 1881, St Peters, Liverpool
John Thomas Murray parents Walter Daniel and Jane Ann Murray.
Also gives a birth date 9 th Sep 1881
He could have been born John Thomas and then be known as Thomas, my great granddad was born George Stephen and always used Stephen as his Christian name.

Just a thought - Southport did not become part of the Ormskirk Registration District until 1894.
The entry found by cath151 says that Walter Daniel and Jane Ann Murray lived in Southport, and Walter Daniel is a Shoemaker.

Looks like John Thomas registered in West Derby Registration District (8b) in September quarter 1881, page 516.

Do you know when/where he died?
We might be able to work backwards from there,to confirm his correct name and dob.

We don't even know if that is the right birth yet though, littleJ needs to come back and confirm if we are on the right track ;D
Although the father's names of Walter Daniel are looking good!

Further to my previous query (and help from other users) I have the birth cert of my Granddad showing his birth in Walton Gaol. The birthplace is designated USD which I know is Urban Sanitary District. Is this usual for a prison? I assume that his mother was an inmate although I haven't been able to confirm this absolutely 'cos of the lack of available records from Walton.

If you have his birth cert presumably it names his parents and what jobs they did?
Is it possible that his dad was working there. Does it give one address for the birth and another for the usual address of the parents.Who registered the birth, mum or dad or both?
