Would anyone be kind enough to look for Morris and Rose Leavitt, Ellie and John Leavitt in the 1891 census. In 1901 they lived in Lancaster but Ellie was born in 1885 in Manchester so hope they may still be there. John was born 1870, not sure about Morris and Rose but circa 1840/50. Thank you in anticipation!

couldn't find morris or rose - do you know where they were born?? or any middle names that they might have used
The name 'Leavitt' wasn't very common - is this the only spelling of the name? has it varied between census' before?
The following family has a Ellie of about the right age. from your message i wasn't sure how the family worked, whether they were one family or if john was son and ellie grandaughter?

Thank you for your time. My Leavitt's were listed in the 1901 census as living in Lancaster and were originally from either Poland or Russia. However, their daughter was down as having been born in Manchester in 1885. My grandfather was born somewhere called Holand as far as we can decipher and the family went at some point to America/Canada. He then came back on holiday, met my grandma and stayed. Trouble is, apart from the 1901 census and his marriage cert in 1895, he doesn't seem to exist anywhere in the world! Any ideas much appreciated. Once again many thanks for your time.

Would suggest that Holand as a birthplace may have been Holland in Lincolnshire which was once a large district thereabouts. The name survives in that area as Holland Fen. Just a thought.............

Hm, hadn't thought of that one!!

Having another look at your problem, if the holand was hard to read could not the 'h' be a B and the place boland. It would be written how it sounded in those days but today would be Bowland or Bowland Forest which is near Lancaster.

Hi, thanks for having thinking cap on! Someone has kindly checked all census returns up until 1901 and that is the only one he turns up on. Looks like he spent his life in the mysterious Holand or Canada. Either way, I really am sure he didn't exist!! He certainly knows how to hide behind a great brick wall, that's all I'm saying! Thanks again - Di
