Good morning
I am searching for a marriage record for my great-great grandparents which has proved elusive for some years now. Perhaps someone here can assist. Details I have:
Groom:
Thomas BURKE
Born: 26 Apr 1841, Kirbrown (Carabrown?), Galway, Ireland
Died: 20 May 1906, Milton, Otago, New Zealand
Son of John BURKE and Mary, nee CONNOR
Bride:
Sabina FRANCIS
Born: about 1849, Barrandooley, Galway, Ireland
Died: 20 Jan 1882, Helensbrook, Tokomairiro, Otago, New Zealand
Daughter of Michael FRANCIS and Bridget, nee WELSH
Their children, all born in NZ:
Michael
John
Thomas
William
Bridget (twin)
Tobias (twin)
Patrick
Bridget's birth certificate (10/10/1877) shows Thomas and Sabina as married at Castlegar on 24/11/1869.
Patrick's birth certificate (30/10/1879) shows Thomas and Sabina as married at Castlegar on 28/10/1869.
I wrote to the registrar general in Dublin in 1997 and paid the requisite fee for a search. They searched under BURKE and BOURKE and found nothing for 1868 to 1870 inclusive.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks

Hi There
They would have been married in Castlegar Church Galway which I have some records for.
Give me a few minutes to dig them out and I'll see can I find them !

Hi There
Ok So, Good news as I found their marriage !
The thing is that Sabina is one of those trick christian names at the time but when she got married she went under the version 'Celia' - I will have a look for her birth as I'd imagine that she was actually baptised Bridget !!! Bridget usually let onto Delia / Celia / Bina / Sabina depending on the family !
Thomas Burke Celia Francis 9/2/1869 Ballindooly
Stephen Birmingham, Mary Hogan (Best Man & Bridesmaid)
Thomas was from Carrowbrowne, Galway and Celia from Ballindooly which is right beside Carrowbrowne.
This is the church that they got married in !

I will be back to you in a mo with more info !

Hi There
I'm pretty sure that this is Sabina's baptism
Francis Libby 8/3/1848 Michael Francis Bridget Hogan Ballindooly
John Crow, Wenny Francis (Godparents)
Libby is another version of Sabina (crazy I know but true HA !)
The thing is that Francis is not a Ballindooly surname - it is found in Menlo and Terryland and Ballinfoyle (all townlands nearby) but this is the only Ballindooly reference.
When Sabina emmigrated there MAY have been confusion re her mother's maiden name - sure a lot of the time most people just didn't know their mother's maiden name !!!
Anyway, I think what you will find more interesting is that Sir Patrick Hogan is a descendant of the Hogan's of Ballindooly, so in some way you are related to him !!!
I will have another look for more info !

Siblings of Sabina
Sister Mary
Francis Mary 6/12/1845 Michael Francis Bridget Hogan Ballindooly
Hugh Hogan, Celia Moran (Godparents)

Michael Hogan, Kate Fahy (Godparents)
Sister Kate
Francis Kate 6/18/1840 Michael Francis Bridget Hogan Ballindooly
Kate Walsh, John Francis (Godparents)
This then is the marriage of Michael Francis and Bridget (Biddy) Hogan
Michael Francis Biddy Hogan 2/9/1839 Ballindooly
Dennis Francis, Mary Walsh (Best Man & Bridesmaid)
I will have a look for the Burke's now !

Ok SO
On to Thomas now (please note though that his mother's maiden name was actually CONNELL)
Burke Thomas 4/26/1841 John Burke Mary Connell Ballindooly
Cate Burke (Godmother)
Siblings for Thomas
Brother Patrick
Burke Patrick 3/17/1833 John Burke Mary Connell Ballindooly
Daniel Glynn, Ellen Burke (Godparents)
Brother Toby (VERY rare name in the area)
Burke Toby 2/10/1835 John Burke Mary Connell
Thomas Small, Mary Boyle (Godparents - you won't believe this but this Thomas Small was my husband's 3 x Great Grandfather !!!)
Brother John
Burke John 10/4/1837 John Burke Mary Connel Ballindooly
Hubert and Cate Craven (Godparents)
Sister Mary
Burke Mary 9/9/1838 John Burke Mary Connell Ballindooly
Patrick Lee, Biddy Ward (Godparents)
Sister Catherine
Burke Catherine 5/2/1844 John Burke Mary Connell Ballindooly
Pat Silk, Cate Glynn (Godparents)
This is the marriage then for John Burke and Mary Connell
John Burke Mary Connell 3/5/1832 Ballindooly
Patrick Silk, Mary Duggan (Best Man and Bridesmaid)
So - The Castlegar Church records only began in 1827 so I'm afraid that this is as far back as you will get !!
Hoe you enjoy this !

Re GV for the area

You will see a Michael Burke left in Ballindooly - possibly a brother ?
There is a Tobias Burke in Shell Lane but that is in Galway City, but given the rarity of the Christian name it MIGHT be worth following up.
There are 2 Connell families left in Killroghter which is the townland right beside Ballindooley.
There are no Francis's showing in Ballindooley but as I said before the surname is moreso from Menlo and Terryland so he MAY have moved to Ballindooley to marry Bridget Hogan and stayed there to farm for a while.
Then you will see 3 Hogan men still in Ballindooley !

*Gobsmacked*
Wow. What an amazing, interesting and revealing group of responses. Thank you Tara!
You know, I have somewhere in my records a suggestion Mary BURKE's maiden name was CONNELL, not CONNOR. You have confirmed the rumour! Thank you again.
I will have to sift through all of this. You have given me a lot to keep me busy :)
Thanks

Right.... having gone through all of this I have found something new from the NZ records. I found a newspaper article which I thought was about the death of Sabina (nee Francis) but was in fact another Sabina whose maiden name was Burke and appears connected to our Burkes by marriage:
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=BH18960915.2.10&l=mi&e=-------10--1----2--
From this I gather that the aforementioned Toby Burke (b. 2/10/1835) married a Burke, here in NZ:
BURKE, Tobias & BURKE, Mary
RGO 9369/1871
and Mary's sister is the Sabina Burke mentioned in the article above. This is her marriage:
HYNES, John & BURKE, Sabina
RGO 1795/1890
Married 29 Dec 1890 in Milton, Otago, New Zealand
Sabina's parents are listed as William Burke and Mary, whose maiden name appears to be either Walter/Walters or Lualter/Lualters.
Now I'm wondering if Toby and his wife are related!

Hi Nik,
Without knowing the exact particulars of your tree it's hard to know exactly.
The only thing that I can tell you re Burke's is that TOBY / TOBIAS is not a Castlegar Christian name . . . . . and Walter (or variations) as a surname is not a Castlegar Surname either.
