I have a William Maher born 1826 in Tipperary, Ireland. He was stationed in India in the 1850s and 1860s. He married Sarah Ann Lazell in Cawnpore, India and fathered a number of children there too. He was also in Ferozepore and Allahabad. I also presume I have all the right documents too.
I would love to know if it is possible to get hold of his army record. I have found a number of documents from FindMyPast but no Army Record of his service. He was in the 70th Regiment.
He died in Curragh Camp in 1887.

Hi Ian
The seven pages on FindMyPast comprise what is left of his army record. But on two pages it gives his place of birth as Middlesex. Or it this not him?

Thank you Ken. Yes it is him. The funny thing is that I have another soldier born in Ireland but written down as born in Middlesex too. I wonder if they didn't want people to know that they came from Ireland at that time.

Hi Ian
There is a huge amount of information on the 70th regiment in New Zealand as the regiment was posted there from 1861 to 1866. Did he go to New Zealand?

Hi Tiki1962
Yes, he was in New Zealand. He was there between 14 May 1861 and 28 March 1866.

Hi Ian
If you google Papers Past you will find digitised copies of New Zealand papers. On the 3rd January 1866 there was a comprehensive article on the 70th Regiment in New Zealand. You can just google it and it comes up. I always like to flesh out the stories of my ancestors. My great great great grandfather was a hospital Sargeant in the 70th Regiment and was in India and New Zealand. Ho chose to stay as he had been medically retired. Keep chipping away it's amazing what comes online over time.
Best of luck Tiki
