Hi
Can anyone tell me if Records of the staff who worked at Hatherop Castle before it became a school are recorded anywhere.
I have a number of ancestors with several surnames that I know worked there.
I would be looking from 1900.
I believe the House was lived in by the Bazley family.
At the very least knowing the names would be good, if dates and nature of work was also available that would be brilliant..
Thanks in advance

hi have you looked on the1901/1911 census for them, on 1911 there are 12 staff listed&10 on the 1901

Hi
Thanks for the prompt to check census, I had a quick look at these but I already found the relatives I was looking for at home on the Census nights.
I am specifically looking at the years between the World Wars for later relatives.
I know that my Great Grandfather worked over 40 years there as a Gardener after returning from the Army in 1921.
thanks again

Hi
The names I am interested in are definitely
James Sheppard post WW1 until 1960's (he received a 40 year long service award for working there), his daughter Lillian Reeves nee Sheppard during WW2
Another possibility is
Henry Wheeler - pre WW1 - he died in 1918, he lived in the Lodge house attached to the Castle Grounds

Hi Colin, I realise it was some time ago when you posted the request, but have come across it whilst looking for some info on the Wheeler family in Hatherop. Just wondered how you got on, as I wanted to find out if Thomas J Wheeler B.1896 worked there before WW1, Funnily I have worked in the grounds of the walled garden recently and would really like to know if my ancestors did too.

Hi
Are you referring to Thomas John Wheeler, son of George and Hannah Wheeler.
Thomas John died of wounds 1918 KOYLI buried in France and remembered on grave of George and Hannah Wheeler Hatherop Church.
I know that he was listed as a gardener on 1911 census, but do not know where he actually worked.

Hi Colin ,
yep thats the one I was looking for, in the 1901 Census aslo says George the father is a gardener. George Wheeler is my GG Uncle, his brother Arthur was my G Grandfather. Are you related to the Wheelers in any way ?
