Hi there. I am looking for a Philip Hutchings, who had a brother William Hutchings. Philip was born 1809-1815 in Northam, Devon while William was born in 1815 in Portsea, Hampshire. The parents to the best of my knowledge were William Hutchings and Ann. I am trying to determine William Hutchings' ancestry if the above is correct. It appears the family lived in the Northam area for a while.
Thank you

Hi
What other info do you have that links Philip & William?
Where did you get the date range from for Philips birthyear

Hi there. Thank you for your reply. William Hutchings, and his wife Rhoda both died in Tasmania and on their wedding certificate in Devonshire, had Philip as his witness (brother) in 1840. His birth date based on age put him about 1811 or so. He was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Checked the parish records and found a William Hutchings, shipwright, baptized in 1815, with parents of Wiliam and Ann Cobbledick. There was also a son, Philip Hutchings born about 1809 in Northam. Thus the brother Philip and William. I then looked in Northam arise records and found a marriage of Ann Cobbledick and William Hutchings in early 1800's. I then estimated and looked for a William Hutchings in 1780's in Northam area and found one in 1787, father was Philip and mother was Sarah I think. But it seems they moved around a bit. Any thoughts?

That's good info
There is this 1851 entry for Northam - all b there
Philip Hutchings 40 master mariner
Susanna 30
Mary 2
Catherine 7 Mths
HO107 Piece 1895 Folio 273 Page 7
Philip married Susanna Rook in June qtr 1847 Bideford as per freebmd
Now need to find who his father was on the marriage cert to see if it's the right Philip

William Hitchings [note spelling] was baptised at Northam son of William and Ann 4th Nov 1810.
William Hitchings [note spelling] was married at Northam to Ann Cobbledick 25th December 1807.
William Hitchings or Hutchings estimated baptism 1780 does not appear in the Northam register.
Note there were other Hitchings marriages at Northam about that time but no local use of surname Hutchings. Whilst spellings varied and errors in transcriptions etc you would need extra proof to establish the William and Ann were the same pair.

IF - it's the right Philip on the 1851 census above - there is a Masters Certificate of Service for him dated 15.3.1851 showing he had served as a seaman, mate and master for 21yrs

Hi Carole,
Thank you. Yes, I agree that would be the best way to confirm that Philip and William both are children of William and Ann. I did locate a William Hutchings in 1787 in Abbotsham, which is close to Northam. Anyway, I will continue to do some looking.
Kinds regards
Jim

If Philip was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, that's 169 miles away from Northam in Devon.

But Northam is next to Bideford, and with the seagoing connections, it would not be unusual to find the family in another naval setting

If it's any help, I have been trying to weed out these Hutchings also. So far this is what I have (minus some from Monksleigh I just added today and haven't update yet. LMK if you happen to spot any obvious errors to sort out.

Hi AlbatrossIV
I don't want to put the cat among the pigeons but are you sure that your William & Rhoda HUTCHINGS who died in Tasmania are the ones who lived in Northam?
The Northam pair are in my tree. They married there on 12th August 1841 and Phillip HUTCHINGS was a witness. In the 1851 census they were living in Cross Street, Northam, and in the 1861, 1871 & 1881 censuses they were living in Tower Street, Northam. William was a ship's carpenter and was born in Portsmouth.
They are both buried in Northam churchyard. Rhoda died in 1885, age 65, and William died in 1889, age 74.
