Title: GILES, Elizabeth b abt 1825 Plymouth Devon....help with parents please...
Post by: ThommoS on Sunday 27 October 13 05:40 GMT (UK)
Hi...

Having difficulty tracing the parents of Elizabeth GILES who was born about 1825 in Plymouth Devon and was hoping someone could assist please.

The only information on her has come from her Victorian Marriage Certificate in 1855 to a William Glover (have separately posted and also a query regarding Deciphering that certificate here : http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=665867.0 ) she stated she was 30 years old at that time and born in Plymouth Devon.

Her father was John Giles a Mariner and mother Elizabeth (surname illegible)

Have not been able to find her arrival in Australia nor death (possibly Victoria) which occurred between 1863 and 1902 (from her husbands Death Certificate) but hoping to find her and her family in Plymouth and then working out her mothers maiden name from that - perhaps a marriage reference for John and Elizabeth so I can get the Registration if possible and then trace the family from that and identify any siblings.

There are various possibilities for John Giles listed on FindMyPast but was hoping to narrow them down somewhat by a birth registration number for Elizabeth and then obtaining Certificates etc..

The 1841 Census hasn't proved helpful and quite possible her father John Giles, being a mariner; was not at home when the census fell nor Elizabeth who would have been about 16 - so the family is not listed together (that I could find  ??? ).

Possible Christening on IGI for 1 June 1828 in Ashburton Devon with a John Giles and Elizabeth as parents but that is 3 years later than the year I have and does not mention a maiden name so any help or suggestions in finding this family and in particular her birth would be appreciated thanks... Tom

Hi again Tom! Baptisms didn't always happen immediately after the birth, so I see no reason why that one from 1828 couldn't be the right one (that's not to say it is of course!). I have several from my family where the child was anywhere from 3 to 10.

You won't find birth or marriage certificates for the period you're looking for since they didn't come in until 1837 - Parish registers are your only hope I'm afraid, and at that time they only give so much detail (no mother's maiden name on the baptism, and no parents'  names on marriages, usually). I would ask here in the forums for help checking the Ashburton register to see if there's a marriage there for John and Elizabeth prior to 1825.

Good Luck!

By the way - on the 1841 there is a 15 year old Elizabeth Giles (bear in mind ages on the 1841 were often rounded to the nearest 5 for anyone over 15) living with a 70 year old Ann SIMMONS in East Stonehouse which is part of Plymouth. Perhaps one or both parents died.

Registration District:   East Stonehouse
Sub-registration District:   East Stonehouse
Piece:   276
Book:   4
Folio:   19
Page Number:   33
Household Members:
Name                   Age
Ann Simmons   70
Elizabeth Giles   15

Thankyou illumina.

I will follow up the Ashburton Register you mention - trouble not being familiar with the geography there, am continually looking at maps to locate place names and would not have found that so local knowledge is a great help for which I am grateful.

That's a great find on the census - perhaps you have also nailed the identity I sought in the other post.....it makes sense that young Elizabeth could be living with her grandmother at that time - age is about right and was known her father was a mariner so will pursue that also.

Appreciate your help.................Tom

Illumina,

addendum to my previous post......have accessed the 1841 census you mentioned and this has Ann Simmons as a widow with both her and Elizabeth Giles being born 'in county' residing in Newport Street East Stonehouse so that's a distinct possibility....have also contacted the Devon FHS to see what info is available regarding records for BDM material ..... thanks for your help

No problem! If you need any look ups on Ancestry UK (censuses etc) give me a shout, sadly I don't think they have Devon parish registers yet.

Genuki is a good resource for UK family history material - this might be of interest.

Tks Illumina had seen that also - as mentioned my biggest problem is identifying the place names  in the census and other material to see how close they are.....local knowledge helps  :)

I have access to Ancestry also and am making use of the census info etc.. you are correct, they don't have Devon available and my intention was to see what discs the Devon FHS had for sale that would allow me to continue the research.

Thank you for your help...

Hehe, being a Midlands girl I'm no Devon expert I'm afraid! I admit that I use maps a lot myself - the 'directions' function on google maps is particularly useful to me since it's a quick way of finding out if two villages are miles apart or pretty close!
