Post by: ThommoS on Friday 25 October 13 10:36 BST (UK)
Hi,

Hoping someone more literate than I could help me decipher the script on this copy of an 1855 Vic Marriage Certificate between a William Glover and Elizabeth Giles....

I have most of it already but I am unable to make out the maiden name of the bride's mother Elizabeth....??? together with the witnesses so any help would be appreciated tks..........Tom

On first glance it looks like Simmons (on second glance I thought the initial was an R, but I think the i is just hiding under the S!).

The first witness looks like Francis Collander; the second possibly R Healey?

I'll go for Elizabeth Giles, and Francis Callander, and maybe F H Gates as witnesses

Elizabeth Simmons, Francis Collander, and R Heales or Healey.

Thank you for all the comments.......have to agree 'Francis Callander' is one but like illumina suggested, I to am inclined to see the capital letter for Elizabeth's surname more an "R" than "S" based in the flow of the pen writing in the rest of the certificate - sorry about the quality - I tried to scan it to max but the size is reduced on the upload.

The more I increase the font size to read, the harder it gets to make out........might need a new prescription for my old peepers I think...or more carrots in the diet . ;D

I do appreciate all your help thanks...Tom

The second witness, I see an "r" near the end, possibly ending "dry".   Maybe Hendry.

It does look a bit like an r, but compare with the second letter - I think they are both e's written like a curvy E.

Just a further note .... have since found that the Minister who performed the Marriage was the Rvd Canon Septimus Lloyd Chase - he signed his name S Lloyd Chase on the form so quite possible the surname of the brides' mother commences with an 'S" rather than an 'R' as I initially thought?....maybe Saunders/Simmonds/Simmons as previously suggested

Have also posted on the Devon list here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=666039.0 to see if I can find a marriage for the parents and work out the name that way.........it's certainly a mystery so far....... ???

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.....thanks
