Title: Hemmings family, Llanwono
Post by: honeybun on Thursday 16 June 05 21:36 BST (UK)
I am looking for the family of William Hemmings on census returns before 1901.  In 1901 he was living at 5 Station Terrace, Llanwono but I can't find him in any returns before that.

1901
William Hemmings 39 Coal Hewer born Hanley, Staffs.
Fanny Hemmings 41 Born Monmouth Walford?
Fannie Hemmings 12 Born Penrhiwceiber Glamorgan.
Bertha Hemmings 10  "             "
Rosie (Rosina) 8  Hemmings Born   "        "
William Hemmings 3  Born                 "    "
John Hemmings, Brother 24 Coal Hewer Born Durham, Stockton.

Any information would be very useful.

Thanks

Honeybun

Hi Honeybun

This is not a perfect match but bear with me.

RG12/4432 60 25

HEMMINGS William H M 33 - coalminer
HEMMINGS Mary W M 30
HEMMINGS Lottie dau 7
HEMMINGS Gertie dau 4
HEMMINGS Fanny dau 2
HEMMINGS baby son 2 months

In the column for place of birth the enumerator has written the following:

"Left this place early on Monday April 6th.  Failed to leave particulars as to where born."

In 1901 the older children may be working away from home.  If William had remarried, the family you have in 1901 much more closely resembles this one.  what do you think?

Hi Arranroots

I can see how you worked through this one and it might just be possible.  I did see this on the census but didn't consider it - will now check to see if William did marry twice.  I just wish the census ages were more accurate.

Thanks - anything is possible and worth trying!

Honeybun, I do not know if this helps but I believe that I have found William Hemming in the 1881 census living in Worcester.
William Hemming Head Male 40 Severn Stoke Worcester  Genl Lab...
Charlotte Hemming  Wife   38 SevernStoke .....
William Hemming  Male  18 Stourbridge,Stafford   Carter.
Mary j. Hemming  Daur.  15  Stourbridge,Stafford.
James Hemming  Son     12  SevernStoke Worcester  Scholar.
Louisa Hemming Daur   10  Stourbridge Stafford   Scholar.
Florence Hemming  Daur  8  Sunderland Durham Scholar.
John H. Hemming  Son  4  Sunderland,Durham  Scholar.
They lived at 61 Astwood Road,Claines,Worcester,England.
My reasons for thinking that this is the same family are the ages and birthplaces of William and his younger brother John(lodging with William+his wife in 1901)also the family appeared to move around a lot,and one of Williams daughters was called Lotte, possibly named after his mother Charlotte, this is all guesswork of course, but it is worth looking at this family, because a lot of the pointers match, good luck in your search,Bethan

Hi Bethan

Thanks for your reply.  I have got a bit further with this family since my first posting - in fact yours is the right family, William aged 18 is the son I am researching.  I can't find him in 1871 or 1891 but I had found this one (1881) and 1901.

If you come across him again please let me know!  They did seem to move around a lot.

Regarding the Hemming family Llanwonno, I am a direct descendant of William and Fanny Hemming through their second daughter Gertrude Anne (my great grandmother) and have been looking into the history of the family tree. I would love to hear from any one related to this family.

Hi Barti

It's a while since I did this research and you may be able to fill in the gaps for me too if they are the same family.  I am missing 1871 and 1891 Census returns for William.  Fanny was his second wife, he was first married to Charlotte Astins who died aged 45 in 1888 at Worcester.  They had several children - but you may already know all this.

The family is on my husband's side (just) - Rosina Hemmings, daughter of William and Fanny, was the first wife of my husband's grandmother's second husband, William Carpenter.  Rosie died of TB aged 29 in 1921 in Ystradyfodwg.  They had three children, who are my husband's mother's step siblings.  It's difficult to put this down sensibly in an e mail!

If they are the right family you may be able to help me fill in the two Census gaps.  William Carpenter was born in Severn Stoke, Worcestershire.

I will send you info if you don't have it, just get in touch by personal message and I can contact you by e mail privately.
