Title: Robert Clarke 1758-1841 how to find his will
Post by: jhstewart on Thursday 24 October 13 12:34 BST (UK)
Robert Clarke: Hi team, this is my first blog...so hope I'm putting enough info...Robert Clarke was born at Sebergham, Carlisle, Cumberland of Robert Clarke (1729-1796) and Mary Clarke (ne Robson) (1728-1798). He died at Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire, 2 Sept 1841. Will written 17 Dec 1841. He was a solicitor for Ashridge Park Estate. I know the will exists. He did have property at Carlisle (that is word of mouth). How can I find out if it is at Carlisle RO or even Shrewsbury RO or wherever? It has lots of  family names in it, which should help with the family tree. I tried St Catherine's in London, thinking that all bdm docs had gone there. That cost me money for nothing.
Cheers :)

Hi Thanks. Nothing there. But thanks  for the info. Robert Clarke left quite an estate. The will was in the hands of a historian family member, who donated everything to Carlisle offices including drawings, bibles etc (have found those). Her intention was to lodge the will with Shrewsbury. But she isn't alive anymore to ask. Could there be a central register somewhere? It's not on Ancestry. :)

Thanks Marg
Somewhere I have a letter written by the executers of the family estate of the lady who held the will. I thought that she deposited it...but maybe they have it. :)

Hi

The only other place I think it could be, would be the Cumberland Archive, she must have got it from somewhere

http://www.cumberlandarchives.co.uk/?option=com_search

If you call them they be able to point you in the right direction

The will of "Robert Clarke, of Stockton, Durham, and Ashridge, Buckingham". Will dated 17th December 1840, proved at London 6th October 1841.

Sole executor is his nephew Robert Rayson of Stockton. Requests to be buried at Nettledon Chapel, near Ashridge. Mentions nephews Robert Clarke and Thomas Clarke, and nieces Margaret and Mary Ann Clarke, sons and daughters of his brother John Clarke deceased. Also nephew John Clarke, only surviving son of his brother William Clarke, deceased. Also Robert Clarke, son of his brother Robson Clarke. And lots of others.

It runs to 8 pages, so if this is your man, then PM me your email address and I will send you a copy.

Alan.
