Title: ALLEN, John - family crest: "Fortiter"
Post by: fortiter on Tuesday 22 October 13 01:40 BST (UK)
Looking for descendants of John Allen, sometime of Saint Iago de la Vega, Jamaica who recorded the "Fortiter" crest in 1779. Also his grandson Henry Howard Allen of Inchmartine who recorded the crest again in 1878.

The crest is presumably the one shown in your avatar which unfortunately not clear enough for the bord to be identified. You are presumably talking about a crest rather than a shield or a full coat of arms.  However in that case what precisely do you mean by recorded.  Did the record include a blazon?  In which case it would be extremely useful if you could reproduce the blazon particularly if there are any differences betweeen the two "recordings"

Hi All

If you enter Port Allen Perth and Kinross into google maps the inchmartine Perth and Kinross

You will find they are only about 6 miles apart Perhaps the archives at the A K Bell library may have some info.

Added:  Memorial for John Allen esquire of Inchmartin, concerning a transaction entered into by Sir Stuart Threipland, whereby Sir Stuart Threipland agreed to sell certain parts of his estate of Kinnaird to John Allen for “an adequate sum of money”,

The above taken from a page of A K Bell archives.

Thanks, David.

My family holds items featuring the crest. All the information I have about the crest has come from the office of the Court of the Lord Lyon, and the terms "crest" and "recorded" are theirs. There was no mention in their correspondence to me of a blazon.

I appreciate your time and effort in responding,
Jonathan

It is a pity that the court in confirming the crest did not provide you with details of the coat of arms of which the crest would have formed part.  This further detail could have helped with understanding the family relationships.  Did they actually identify the bird involved?

Folks,   you can look up the old arms in the Lyon register online on Scotlands People. I think it's free.

Thanks again, David.  All that is registered is the crest - no coat of arms. My aim here is to try and clarify how my family came to possess items incorporating the crest - I'm fairly sure  I  have worked it out,  but descendants of these Allens may be able to help.

Grateful thanks, Martin.
I wasn't aware of the biography - it looks like a great resource.
Interestingly my information shows John James Allen with only one son, so I will have to follow that up.
