I am looking for the parents of Annie Buckland born ca 1882. Annie married Leonard Black. On their marriage certificate (27 nov 1917, Basingstoke) Annie's father is named as Gilroy Buckland, hawker. The only thing I can find is a Gildroy Buckland, travelling hawker who was living in Highworth, Wiltshire in 1881 with his "kept mistress" Janet Smith and her 3 year old son Henry. A Gildroy Buckland died age 23 in Cricklade Wiltshire in 1882 so perhaps Janet got pregnant with Annie and then Gildroy unexpectedly died whilst she was pregnant. Normally the marriage certificate would say father deceased and in this case it didn't but perhaps there was an error. Interestingly there is a Henry Buckland (could it be Henry Smith?) on the 1911 census married to Rosina with a son Gildroy. With a name like that surely it can't be coincidence? I can however find no trace of Annie on census documents with or without her parents. Can anyone help?

Hi
Is Annie's birthyear worked from her age when she married or from the fact that Gildoy died in 1882

The 1881 image is Jane - not Janet
ps
I love the description of her "marital" status - kept mistress

If you look at the entire encampment in 1881 there's a large number of Smiths and a few Bucklands thrown in as well - Hugh Buckland also has a kept mistress who's a Smith. My guess is Annie is in with them on other censuses (where they are picked up and enumerated)
You might be better off in the Traveller section of Rootschat as there are some experts with access to records of the complex and intermingled (and often with interchanging surnames) families

Annie's age is given as 36 on her marriage certificate and if this is the correct Gilroy Buckland on the 1881 census then there is no mention of Annie so I am assuming she was born 1882 ish

Bit of a long shot, but how about this on 1891 in Woodcott, Kingsclere. Encampment of tents in Bedlam Bootton (??) field. One group is
John Buckland 22 - green gatherers
Jane F Buckland 30 - sister in law, widow
Henry Buckland 14 - nephew
Ann M Buckland 10 - niece
RG12, 966, 10, 14

Thank you Mabel - that certainly does look promising!

I think this site may help demonstrate the tangled web - http://gypsyjib.wikifoundry.com/page/OLD+BUCKLAND+FAMILY+LINE
find the section on Hugh/Uriah Buckland and his partner/wife Cimentina Smith - they are in the same encampment in 1881 as Gildroy and this site suggests he is their son (who also uses the surname Smith)
i think I may have found Annie in 1911 - as Leonard's wife

I can't thank you enough Mabel - I think you have cracked it. A huge thank you :)

You are correct regarding Anne Buckland being the child of Gileroy Buckland * Jane Smith
even though he died around the time she was born......
Her marriage to Leonard Black son of Walter Black & Eliza Hughes was not the only link between families.........
There was another marriage of Uriah Sr son- Anne Uncle into same family :
Sidney Buckland/Smith b 1867 Surrey partnered Trenit Black b 1873 Surrey a sister of Leonard
