Dont think much of Gmail anyway but at the moment, get onto page then goes black, dark grey n freezes. Anyway would consider any suggestions for safe email with not a lot of spam.

I am very impressed with Gmail and have never had any problems with it.
Gmail is one of the securest email providers around. I would stay clear of Yahoo and Hotmail, they have had a lot of spam attacks recently.
You could install Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/thunderbird/) and use that to view your emails, so you get the security of Gmail but an interface which you prefer.

Hi,
I'd agree entirely with Jack. If you install T'bird you get the best of both worlds. You've still got webmail available anywhere and can get your mail at home to be kept to hand with a POP3 or IMAP mail set-up. Been using this combination for some time.

Another vote for using Thunderbird, though I'm not a fan of Gmail. I've found GMX to be a good email service.
If you're prepared to pay a small amount, you might also find an email host whose pages aren't smothered with adverts. I use something like this as well, though it's part of a website hosting package, so more than you're asking about.

I have 2 accounts with Yahoo (one being Ymail), and both are great.
Best wishes,

I've had lots of spam messages sent to me from Yahoo accounts recently, scammers pretending to be my contacts.

I'm with Arthur on this!
GMX works fine for me.

It might be worth looking into why your screen goes black, dark grey and then freezing.
What's your setup there on your computer, are you using Windows and what internet browser are you using?

I would agree with Trystan - it sounds as if the problem may be bigger than just gmail ..... has this happened with other web pages ? There is also the possibility that your anti virus may cause a conflict if it is set up to check emails as they are downloaded to your computer
