Title: Penzance marriage registers - Jelbert/Mitchell
Post by: asherman on Saturday 19 October 13 15:13 BST (UK)
Could anyone look up the marriage of Muriel M JELBERT to John J MITCHELL in Penzance (sorry I don't know which parish) in the December qtr of 1936 (as per FreeBMD).  I am trying to find the details of John (occupation and age) and his father so I can find the correct birth for him.

I know they later moved to Wallasey where last child was born at the end of 1951 and Muriel remarried in 1955, but I cannot find a death for John J (James?) Mitchell to help me locate his birth.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

To lookup a marriage in parish records - you need to know which church it took place in.

These are all the locations covered by the Penzance RD

Are none of the children still alive who could help with this info?  5 born between 1938 and 1951

He may have been a seaman or in the forces when he died although the last 4 children were born fairly close together

They may have divorced - does Muriel show herself as a widow on the 1955 cert?

Sadly the children cannot help.  Their father disappeared from their lives very early and when their mum remarried they all took the new husbands surname.  What happened to JJ Mitchell is a mystery.

Presuming the last child was definitely John's and given that Muriel re-married in 1955 - that only leaves 4yrs.

For her to re-marry legitimately if he wasn't dead- she would have had to divorce him.  If he had deserted her and she didn't know his whereabouts, she would have had to wait 7yrs to get a divorce.

If she didn't divorce him and gave her status as a widow when she re-married - she must have known he was deceased

Hi Carol

I appreciate that but there is no record that I can find on FreeBMD for a John or John J Mitchell death in Wallasey (the place of the last birth and the remarriage), Cheshire or a John J in the whole country (too many John Mitchells to check) that matches the approximate age (assuming he was of a similar age to his wife who was born in 1915, i.e. aged about 38).  The nearest I found was a John T who died in Macclesfield in 1952 aged 46.  I have even checked just the surname Mitchell (and variations) for Cheshire just in case.  So unless he died abroad or at sea I am stuck. I guess I will just have to buy the certificate.

That may be the only way out as there are unlikely to be any local transcriptions for that period - they tend to concentrate on older marriages

It may be unconnected but I noticed that Muriel was b Penzance 1915 so I looked for John Mitchell births in Cornwall 1910-1915

Births June qtr 1911
John J Mitchell  Penzance  5c 188

Births December qtr 1914
John J Mitchell mmn  Thomas  Redruth  5c 304

And these deaths

John James Mitchell aged 62 born 24 March 1911
Date of Registration September 1973   Penzance 7a 215

John Joseph Mitchell aged 61 Birth Date 13 Oct 1914
Date of Registration September 1976 Liverpool 36 0337

Hi Anne,
Just joined and saw your query. Not sure if you since found this information but the marriage of John Mitchell and Muriel Jelbert took place in Gulval Church, 22 Oct 1936. If you go to the British Newspaper Archive you should find a notice of the marriage in the "Cornishman" newspaper, which may give you some more details. I have him recorded as John James Mitchell in my Jelbert family tree, so that may help you.  Good luck, Ralph

Hi Ralph

Thank you yes I did find that.

This research was for a client back in 2013.

It does prove that this forum works well though.   :)  I hope it works for you.

regards
Anne

Hi Sarah

I am really sorry.  I have been a personal member since 2009 and this was the only time I tried to find something on behalf of a client - I usually encourage them to do it themselves, but this client had never used a forum before.  I promise never to use it like that again.

Hello Sarah,

Thanks, was just trying to help out and it looks like the client may be long gone. If they did want to get in touch then I can help on the Jelbert tree.

Regards,

Ralph
