There are various records from 1919 until 1940 on Find my Past including a photograph. His NOK is given as his sister Mrs Miller. If you think it his him. You need to download them and come back for some interpretation of the numbers which will equate into the names of ships. His DOB is given as 1883 and 1888 but I am sure this is a typo as the Discharge A numbers are the same.
There is a WW1 medal listing for him here
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D7975532
download for £3.36 so he must have had service in WW1.

Is there any chance I could see those findmypast records. The ww1 medal record shows his address as Carolina street Liverpool this is correct as he died there 1940 as then he was an air raid warden and was killed by the blast. The Mrs miller also fits as this is Margaret Barwise who married john Thomas miller.

I would not like to compromise this site with copyright issues by attaching the information from FindMyPast.
You can pay £6.95 to get 60 credits which will allow you to access the information.
Once you have registered on FindMyPast, go to https://www.findmypast.co.uk/content/search-menu/education-and-work and scroll down to Merchant Navy Seamen 1835-1941.
Alternatively you can get copies of originals from
http://www.southampton.gov.uk/s-leisure/artsheritage/history/maritimehistory/centralindex.aspx
Cost you £15
Or free by visiting the National Archive and searching the series BT348, BT349 and BT350

Hi Pabloabadul
Please note that your request for FindMyPast records is in contravention of the terms & conditions of posting on Rootschat.
(Taken from our Guidelines for Posting)
http://www.rootschat.com/help/posting_guide.php
Do not ask for look-ups from commercial sources.
Most commercial sources have strict 'Terms of Use', which forbid publishing their data elsewhere, so asking for such look-ups is also asking people to ignore the 'Terms of Use'
If you are unable to purchase credits, check out your local library as a growing number are offering free access in house to FindMyPast including the British Library at St Pancras and the National Archives at Kew.

Is there a list showing which library's have access to findmypast in terms of these records. Which is not the British library or Kew.
thanks again

Can anyone help me here I would be very grateful thanks

You haven't updated your profile to show where in the world you are.
A city or county might help to locate a source near to you.

My local archivesoffer both Ancestry and findmypast for free, I suggest you 'google' for your local archives to see if they offer them as well. Some libraries also offer findmypast - again you could find this using google :)
-
The Wirral council does not specify whether they use findmypast or not. A search on google turns up nothing of any relevance to a town/city in a 50 mile radius.
thanks

can anyone help me here thanks?
-
I used google and found these
Wirral library has Ancestry and newspapers
http://www.wirral.gov.uk/my-services/leisure-and-culture/libraries/online-reference-resources
I think some of these are within 50miles
http://www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/residents/libraries/find_a_library.aspx
their family history resources are here

How far are you from Liverpool?

For the Liverpool central library it says "You can also use our computers to search 'Ancestry' and 'Find My Past' websites for free. All research facilities are open during normal Central opening hours." Does this mean it covers the full subscription to these sites on the conputers or just search facilities
thanks
-
They should give you access to all the search results. Why don't you phone them tomorrow and ask?
(I do know that some libraries don't have access to the recent electoral registers)
-
in the main libraries are funded by local council tax payers. Any subscription service has to be paid for out of the council tax and such facilities are intended for residents of the borough or city holding a library card. Different councils chose whether or not to offer on line facilities. If your own borough does not offer access to a particular search facility you would not normally be able to access from libraries in a neighbouring borough which may offer free access. You also have to weigh up your time and travel costs against the £6-95 for purchasing credits for your personal access.
-
ok, so there is no possible way to do it unless credits are bought just to verify.
-
Sorry to disagree, cemetery friends, but I have library cards for 3 local authorities but I am only resident in 1. I find that all 3 libraries have different selections of books.
The nearest library to me, about 2 miles, is in a different local authority.
My own local authority library is about 3 miles away.
I have had no problems signing up to the library services with any of them. I also have no problem popping into any of them and using their internet services.
My daughter joined a neighbouring authority library this summer because they have a sheet music department, again no problem.
I suggested yesterday that you give them a ring. My advice still stands.

As Dawn says, if any of the libraries are near to you please either phone them or email them to find out their policy for yourself :)
If any do offer free access it could be worth your while to do several look-ups :)
-
So in the case of the central library at Liverpool would I be able to access the details even though I am not in their borough or would I need a card to access the details?
-
Once again-
As Dawn says, if any of the libraries are near to you please either phone them or email them to find out their policy for yourself :)
-
Via the phone they said it would not be possible without a library card from that borough
-
so you go to the nearest library in that area, or central library in Liverpool, and you apply to become a library member.

Seems to much trouble for the sake of one small record. Which I am trying to obtain for Robert`s niece who is trying to compile a family photo album.
thanks
