Hi
I have a Grave Register for Preston Old Cemetery and can account for all people in the grave. I have all the births, marriages and deaths for them. My mum went to Preston and took a photo of the headstone for my records. The headstone is in very bad condition. At the bottom left there are the words
ALSO OF
FRANK W
My problem is I don't have a Frank W in my Ward family tree. I am presuming the W stands for Ward. I have checked births and deaths but nothing matches my family.
I cant work out how to upload the photo
Has anyone ideas to help please

Hiya Tracy...can you list the names AND years please
ie
James Ward 1835 - 1887
you may be lucky and have some of them on www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html
-
Could this be him ?
Francis Ward aged 35 burial 26th January 1793 at St Johns ,Preston.Lancashire ??
does Preston Old Cemetery have an official name ?...I presume St Johns is a churchyard - is St Johns still there ?
-
The gave register says
Burial Deceased/age
30/11/1872 Joseph Ward 1 year
06/01/1877 Ada Hunt 11 months
23/08/1910 Doris Ward 6 years
28/09/1910 Alice Ward 73 years
06/02/1913 Thomas Ward 80 years
01/09/1948 Joseph Ward 73 years
18/05/1955 Elizabeth Ward 86 years
I know Elizabeth never married.
As far as St Johns I will have to check it out

hi,
on the headstones ive been looking at the ones at the bottom were sometimes but on last - as they added more names on as the later - so the earlier burials would be at the top and the later ones at the bottom (althought i may be wrong this is my own personal observation from my own research there may be exceptions of course to this rule !)
hope that helps

Preston Cemetery didn't open until 1855, so the Francis Ward who died in 1793 would have been buried at St Johns, there are no gravestones in the churchyard
There is a Frank Ward who died in Preston in 1956 aged 73, maybe he's your man?
On Monday I'll go to the cemetery office and see what they can tell me (send me a PM to remind me, I have a brain like a sieve)
Kind regards
Simon

From your own research you know Thomas was born out Garstang way and he was a cotton overlooker,he had sons Thomas ,Joseph and James and daughter Maria, and am I correct in assuming the Elizabeth is his daughter,
Ada Hunt we worked out a little while ago,
-
HI Tracy
There definitely isn't anybody but the ones you've mentioned in the grave. Why the grave has Frank W on it is a mystery to the cemetery staff and they couldn't think of an explaination for it being there
Kind regards
Simon

So back to the drawing board Simon, he must be buried elsewhere,

Hi Mo
I did that, but there doesn't appear to be anything that will upload a photo ??? ???
Simon

I think that's because this is a 'look up' board which does not have the ability for attachments enabled.

Thanks Josey, I thought it was my inability to use RootsChat ;D
