Bearing in mind I have 6 various computers here, Microsoft has so far released 21 updates for Win 7, and 13 for XP. (inc office security updates)
So if you see that gold shield down on the task bar, you know your computer is going to be slow until all updates have been installed ;)

Have done the 21 on Windows 7, looking forward (I don't think) to XP later! Sometimes wonder if putting a shilling in the meter would help!
-
I feel sory for those on a slow connection, could take up valuable computer time!

I was surprised to see 21 updates, + 3 optional, but Microsoft knows what it can do with the Bing desktop update ;D
I'd better fire up the netbook, which has XP, & let it get on with it before I need to use it.
Waiting for them to download & install I can cope with, it's the need to reboot & the nagging if I don't do it that annoys me >:(

My computer is slow today; I had remembered the date (2nd Wednesday) and expected the privilege of a date with Microsoft.
-
Just done the computer too..well left it really to do itself and went to feed the dog and made a cuppa ;DNow I will have to do the lappy when that has finished charging ::)
-
I've got Windows 8 and I don't normally have the same problem with updates, however, today I had 26 updates plus 3 optional. Apart from the optional they were all security updates, so I don't know if they've suddenly had a problem. Like Betty, I ignored the Bing update. ;D

My computer (XP) normally does any updates during the day, last night just before bed it decided to do 18 of them. It took ages to upload them and it kept telling me not to switch off it would do that for me.
I ended up coming back down to check that it had switched off 30 mins after going to bed.
Stooopid thing ::)

Likewise - Received a big batch of XP updates yesterday.
And I thought it was just me!!
-
I don't appear to have had any updates. Windows 7 on mine.
-
My OH has Windows 7 but his PC is set for automatic updates which are installed when he turns off his PC, but he hasn't had any over the last couple of days. I've updated and installed all mine and with superfast broadband it took about 20 minutes.
-
Perhaps this is the reason for the multiple updates.

My Windows 7 didn't update automatically either though it is set to do so, I had 21 plus 6 optional.
Only had 7 on XP PC.

I have always just turned the monitor off and gone to bed - the computer will just switch itself off after the updates.

That is exactly what I did,but I could still hear it whirring 20 minutes later.
So after a further 10 mins I went down to check that it had finally finished.
I couldn't go to sleep knowing the computer tower was still on !

Mine arrived today, 81 + 4 optional. I took the office ones off (ok do you think?). But it's taking forever, and slowing some sites down. Hour and a half and still only 48% done.

Silvery: Given the number of updates offered, I would say that your computer hasn't been 'seen' by microsoft for ages? I would imagine your machine would ask to be rebooted a couple/more times before completed.
Happy computing everyone! 8)

On the netbook there's 48. I'll do them later, when the other lot's finished. Which could be some time.
Do we really need all these updates? Or do I, considering what I do online, read the papers, come on here, email etc and things like that? Different if it's business or something I would have thought.
-
I noticed my little netbook had 27 updates the other night so just left it to get on with it.
I can now print wirelessly again from the netbook :) It used to do, then stopped and despite all my efforts wouldn't do because of some other application. I couldn't resolve but it's ok now (fingers crossed).

Hope you haven't put the mockers on it,saying that it's okay again ;D ;D ;D

;D
I sorted it once and it worked but then reverted so if I wanted to print anything, I had to email it to myself and print from the pc. ::)
It is much more convenient with the netbook but as long as I can print from somewhere, I'm happy.

You lucky so and so ;) I have just had to waste over and hour getting back into my computer; I still don't know for certain how I managed it. I am seriously considering switching off automatic updates for a trial period to see what difference (if any) it makes. Opinions please.
-
I switched off automatic updates, which is probably why I've got so many. At least you have control over when they are activated, and can make allowances for the length of time it takes, so you don't need your pc for that time.
I've knocked quite a few off, for office and works, don't use either of them.
But they take forever to load. ridiculous. I wonder if we need them all.
-
You can switch off automatic updates but tick a box so you'll be notified when there are updates. That way you can check which ones you need and ignore (hide) the rest.

Thanks Lizzie, Now for chapter 2 (and I hope final) chapter of this update saga. After around 75 minutes I managed to get the computer to boot up (through bios) and had a decent though curtailed session apart from Firefox not responding again! Now sheduled for execution shortly!
When I switched off the updates were there again, 19 of them this time, one has fallen by the wayside. There being no way to switch off without installation in W7 I bit the bullet, switched, went to Sainsbury's and got wet!! On return I switched on again and guess what went through the same rigmarole again except that this time after the restart in the middle the computer booted up OK (???) No doubt something lurks in cyberspace waiting for me. Next step to go into Windows update and tailor it to my requirements which if possible will be security only, and manual download. That reminds me is microsoft updates department staffed by Manuel and other migrants from Fawlty Towers?

Roger - I wonder if your problem is because you're running Windows7 and 8 on the same computer.

I don't think so Lizzie, they have run happily side by side for around a year now, and the set up was done by a professional, i.e. I actually parted with money. Anyway I now have the situation under control, I will instal security updates only and do them one by one, take a lot longer but at least should identify problems as they happen.

Windows 7 + MS Office 2007 + Adobe Reader Updates for 10/10/2013 - number of updates in brackets at the end of the line:-
Adobe Reader XI (11.0.05) (1)
Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (11)
Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Extended (5)
Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 (32)
Microsoft Silverlight (1)
Microsoft Windows (13)
That is 63 updates, which is probably a new world record for my PC.
-
I got the 21 updates yesterday and another one today. The one today threw me into a mild panic as after installing the computer restarted and then switched off again (something that has never happened before). It then restarted again as normal(??!!)
If anyone hasn't had the updates they have either been done automatically or are sitting waiting to be done. I must say that they were all for x64 based systems.

57 for combined Office and NET Framework.
