Hello All,
Some time ago I had some help regarding the Lawrence's in Dover/Deal.
I have recently obtained a copy marriage certificate which has thrown my believed line awry.
On the eighteenth of September 1877 my Gt Grandfather Charles (43 - labourer) married Elizabeth Hammond (previously Gardner) at the parish church of Gt Mongeham.
Fathers name is written as William Lawrence.
Prior to having this document I had believed that Charles's father name was Stephen married to Mary Ann Seath about 1830 and I had followed that line.
I have details of Census records for Stephen and Charles from 1841 onwards but the spanner thrown into the works has derailed me which a decent sized spanner might well do. And how do you pronounce Mongeham?
Thanks, Martin

1881 shows Charles was b Deal 1836 but no 1841 entry matches a father William

Thanks, yes this is what has confused me.
Do you or anyone know how I would access the Parish Records for the Parish Church at Gt Mongeham?
Regards,
Martin

I think the parish church would be St Martin's but there is no guarantee that Charles was baptised there.
1851 - Charles - son of Stephen & Jane - is shown as b Gillingham and there is no entry for a Charles Laurence/Lawrence with a Deal birthplace
1861 has an entry for a Charles Lawrence b 1837 Deal who was in the Royal Navy & unmarried
1871 Charles Lawrence b 1837 Deal son of Stephen & Mary was unmarried & a sawyer
Is Charles shown as a bachelor on the 1877 marriage cert given he was 43 at that time

Hello CarolW,
There is a Charles Lawrence on the 1851 census aged 14 living in Deal, parents Stephen and Mary at 4 Silver Street, Deal. I had that as one of my reference points to the Stephen Lawrence line.
Also the Navy one on 1861 census. In 1871 he is 34 unmarried still living with parents Stephen and Mary.
On the GRO certificate he is a bachelor 43 married to Elizabeth Hammond 38 (widowed) previously Gardner.
As I said William Lawrence as his father on the certificate has thrown me off track.
I can only assume that the Charles I have been following on 1841/51/61/71 is the wrong Charles for my line or the William named as father on the GRO certificate is a) not his dad b) forgotten his name was Stephen, c) was mad or d) had done it for a bet.
So frustrating this ancestry lark.

Thanks Panda,
It really does look like I have been following the wrong Lawrence although his age does seem to be +- 2 or 3 years on every census.
How did you get the William Lawrence married to Mary Ann Barwick, from Church of LDS?
William's father on the site looks like a John Lawrence (with various spellings).

Hi marltin
The information came from parish records.
Good luck with your research

Just been looking at Gt Mongham parish records and they are, sadly, incomplete. The marriages for the period in question are not there but the Banns are and they show what you already know, that Charles Lawrence maries Elizabeth Hammond, Widow on 18th Sept 1877. There were the customary three sets of Banns and a note saying they were married on that date. Unfortunately no clue as to Charles' father.
