Title: Auckland St Andrews - look up
Post by: judith54 on Saturday 05 October 13 21:15 BST (UK)
Hi All

I would appreciate a look-up of a baptism record Elizabeth Lindsley - 16/3/1798 Auckland St Andrews. I know her father was William Lindsley and her mother Ann but would like confirmation of Ann's surname. From IGI I believe her surname is Lazonby. The full transcription would be appreciated.
There is also a Margaret Linsley father William baptised 5/11/1797 in IGI but don't know if she is one of 'mine' confirmation either way would be great.

Thank you
Judith

Thank you Claire :)

I had forgotten about freereg  - a very useful site.

I can discount Margaret as being one of 'mine'. All I need to do now is try and find out the name of her younger brother William's mother (my direct ancestor) baptised 24/11/1799 Richmond, nr Leyburn per IGI - I think that she was also Lazonby. Their younger siblings mother is Ann Robinson. I have found a marriage for William Lindsley + Ann Lazonby in St Helen's Auckland  7/1/1796 but can not find a burial record for Ann Lindsley or a marriage of William Lindsley to Ann Robinson.  Another brickwall....

Best wishes
Judith

While that spelling of Lazonby may be on the Bishops records the correct spelling of that family line in Durham is Lazenby. There quite a few of that name.

I get sick of people who try to say that in Co Durham the correct spelling of a name is this that or other.

It is all down to the person who wrote the original record how he heard it.

I have Towenson / Townson record right down the line all from the same families right back and in censuses because some of these could not read or write how did tey know that the vicar etc was spelling the family name right.

So we cannot alter for our sake how our ancestors name was spelt in years gone by.

And I have Lazonby/ lazenby reords as well.

WHAT! Not so JOLLY today ;D If your sick of it, don't look, then you won't notice....My point was it may not be down as Lazonby, but Lazenby. If you are checking census records you may have to use many variables on a name, as you rightly point out in quite a firm way, I might add the census enumerators could write what they heard.

I have Tod, Todde, Todd, Toode.

Keep smiling Rodger ;D

As you know that names are spelt different right down the line, don't try and tell people that the right way to spell the name Lazonby in County Durham is Lazenby which your post implied to me.

I think we always keep an open mind on spellings, I was forever being "corrected" on the spelling of my own maiden name  ::) but people make mistakes, handwriting can be mis-interpreted or can be mis-heard :-\

Well I used the wrong terminology instead correct it should have been most common. :-\

Anybdy who has been researching their family back could be confused by the myriad of ways they have spelt even the simplest of both Christian/First names or Surnames over the generations. ;)
probably best to just keep an open mind ;D
