Where was Joseph born? Was he married? If yes - can you include wife and childrens names please
John Hodgson / Swift born geasboro born about 1843 - Brick Maker.
Should this be Guisborough Yorkshire or somewhere else?

Hello Mosiefish
I am having a lot of trouble finding :-
1901
118 Leach Street, Farnworth
Joseph Lever, Head, Mar, 56. Labourer General, Lancs Gt. Lever
Caroline, Wife, Mar, 56, Stockport Cheshire
on ancestry , I think I have found Joseph in 1851 aged 7 Great Lever, then again 1861 aged 16 ?Padilan, and again in 1871 in ? Great Harwood however here he is married to a female called Martha and has a son called John. in 1881 he is married to a Sarah which fits with your previous information, and after Caroline he then marries another Sarah Isaac (widow), would you be able to track down a marriage for Joseph to a Martha, and the marriage to the first Sarah (1881 census).
Many thanks for any help or guidance

Hi Moo,
1875 Joseph Lever married Sarah Cass at Emmanuel Parish Church, Bolton. There are two Cass children living with them on the 1881 census.

Hello Mosiefish
I found 1901 LOVER boy lol - once again thank you

Hi,
I really don`t think that the Joseph in Padiham and Great Harwood who married a Martha is your Joseph. They have different siblings for starters. Your Josephs sister Isabella married a Samuel Gledhill in 1954 at St. Michael, Great Lever. Father William Lever a Crofter.

This is possibly the 1871 census couple ........... note the spelling of the groom

William Lever a labourer, widower married Ann Williams spinster at St. Mary the Virgin, Deane on 6th November, 1825.
William Lever aged 57 was buried at St Michaels Great Lever on 5th September, 1852. His widow Ann then remarried:
26 October, 1857 St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich
Joseph Gregory, 40, Labourer, Widower, Outwood, father John Gregory Labourer
Ann Lever. 50, Housekeeper, Widow, Outwood, father William Williams Labourer
Both made their mark
Witnesses Samuel Cropper and Mary Ann Chapman who both made their mark.
They can be found on the 1861 census living in Little Lever Joseph Gregory aged 45 born Horwich and Ann aged 55 born Warrington which ties in with her place of birth on the 1851 census. Unfortunately Joseph is not living with them. His married sister Ann is living next door to Joseph and Ann – She married an Edward Ramsbottom in 1860.
Unfortunately the whereabouts of your Joseph remains a mystery, but you can definitely rule out the one on the 1861 census born Blackburn who was living with his parents William and Ann. He was a Spinner on his marriage to Martha as was his father.

Hello Mo
Once again thank you for your help, I didn't think the 1861 census Joseph sat right, I wonder where he is, I have checked for the single Joseph Levers and found four. One was a carpenter, one was a stonemason the other two were - a lodger aged 20, hand cotton card room, and the other was only aged 12 but listed as a stepson so I have eliminated him. Think for now I might have to accept defeat and just wonder where he was between 1851 and 1881 for certain. I don't know where else to look.
Thank you again

Hello Elaine,
Sadly no he is not my John Hodgson / Swift
What I have is1851 Census - Not found
1861 Census - Aged 19, Ag Labourer, Thornhill (Living with Aunt)
1871 Census - Not found
1881 Census - Aged 38 - Married - Colliery Labourer - Fox's Row, Shitlington, York
1891 Census - Not found
and a possible 1901 Census - Aged 60 - Widower - Stone Quarryman - Bell Lane, Ackworth, West Riding, Yorkshire
but I can't be sure of the 1901 there were so many, and I don't seem able to find a death for him either, so I was wondering if he had dropped the Swift ( for some reason ).
His son Charles William both marriages show him as deceased but I can't find him, then on another marriage Joseph Lever to Sarah Isaac (John's daughter in law ) in 1906 it is witnessed by a John Hodgson ...so I was kind of hoping that he was still alive but using a different surname.
May be it was just a coincidence on Sarah's cert.
Regards

Hi...what they sometimes did back then was,if they didn't have brothers or sisters as witnesses, then sometimes the clerk or registrar, would ask one of his relations to stand as witness. They were prob given a few pennies, which would come in v handy!
They even got people off the streets to witness the marriage.
Looking my ancestors up,in Lancashire,I came across the same people, time and time again!....they must have been on a good number!
