Title: Why 2 birth certificates for the same child ??
Post by: A bairn on Thursday 03 October 13 21:46 BST (UK)
Could someone suggest why a child would have 2 birth certificates signed by the same registrar on the same date. Both certificates contain exactly the same information except for the district. The child was born in 1932 in Glasgow, one certificate states child born in district of St Rollox, Glasgow the other in Falkirk, Stirlingshire.Although the Falkirk one gives the same place of birth, maternity hospital in Glasgow. The librarian at Register House, Edinburgh could only say the Glasgow District one was the legal one as the child requires to be registered in the District born in. ??

In England and Wales the law is that the birth must be registered in the district in which it took place.  However if the people had moved out of the district before registering the birth, then they go to the local registrar, and he sends the details to the registrar of the district in which the birth took place and it is registered there.

In Scotland it was the law that the childs birth must be registered in both the district it took place AND in the district where the family normally resided. This was usually done by one Registrar sending a copy to the other and the details being entered but sometimes parents did it themselves.

That's interesting Falkryn thank you - I've never come across it in any of the other birth certificates.
