Hi, i'm trying to find out what happened to my great-uncle. He was born Haggs 1904, and moved to Arran to work on a farm in 1921, on leaving Quarriers Home at Bridge of Weir. I'd love to hear any information about him. Thanks.

Hi
Have you checked SP for a marriage/death for him

Hi, yes, i've tried to find him on SP, but i haven't had any luck. Not sure where else to look for him.
-
The SP index is showing 15 marriage matches for that name between 1921-1930 but none in Ayrshire. You can't rule out that he moved to another county.
There are 8 death matches with a birthyear 1903-1905 - what was his mothers maiden name
-
Hi, his mum was Mary Muirhead Paton, also Mary Paton Douglas (she was illegitimate, and her names varied). She died in 1909. Alexander appears as a witness at his brother Robert's wedding in Haggs in 1930, but after that noone heard any more from him. The address he gave as a witness was Haggs, so it's possible he didn't stay in Arran for long, but neither did he stay in Haggs. Many thanks.

There are passenger lists showing as follows:
Alexander Sneddon 25 house joiner - left Southampton for New York 30.5.1929. Address given was in West Lothian. No other Sneddon with him
Alexander Sneddon 33 left Glasgow for New York 21.5.1937. Occ carpenter and last address was Bathgate. No other Sneddon with him
Returned 1953 address shown as 11 Balvic Ave Glasgow - occ carpenter - travelling alone
There are a number of other Alexander Sneddon's on the passenger lists but the above are the only entries matching his birthyear

Hi CaroleW,
thank you for that. I hadn't looked into the possibility of him emigrating. I'm unfamiliar with searching passenger lists etc. How do you think i could try and confirm this is the right Alexander?

With some difficulty unfortunately. There is no death on SP matching to any of his mothers surnames so there is always the possibility he may have returned to the USA and died there.
I can't find him on a passenger list after 1953. Do you know his exact DoB as there are these entries on FS

The death certs will show parents names and mothers maiden name
-
Hi, he was bon 30 Sept 1904, so the second link you sent is close but.... :-\
-
Big but - see this link - it's not your Alexander

I've just been on SP again and using 1904 only as his birthyear I got only 2 matches between 1930-1980 but didn't use his mothers name
I narrowed it down and one was in 1961 and the other in 1980
-
Hmm, definitely not our Alexander, then. Thank you for looking, though.
-
The 2 matches for 1961 and 1980, do they relate to death certificates? I don't know why his mother's name wouldn't be on the cert...He went into the orphanage aged 10, with his older sister, so he would be old enough to remember.
-
Sorry for being a bit thick. i just re-read your post about not using the mother's name.

Just a quick update to say that i have discovered that Alec died at Ochil Hills Sanatorium in 1931, from TB. Sad way to solve the mystery, but at least we know.
