Hi everyone - I'm new to this site and I'm having trouble finding some information out for an old relation of mine
I'm looking for a death date for Peter Sweatman born 1849 who is my great great grandfather.
I have looked for his death register on ancestry but he seems to just vanish. He appears on the 1881 census, then on the 1891 census his wife Martha (Winstanley) is listed as the head of the family but is shown as married. By the 1901 census Martha is listed as a widow so I've narrowed it down that Peter must have died between 1891 and 1901.
Is there anyone out there with a search suggestion or even better has the same relatives as me and can shed some light on things for me?
Fingers crossed :)

Peter and Martha were married in 1876. Later on, she says she was married 29 years, which implies she was widowed in about 1905. I can't find a death in E and W, either on Freebmd or UKBMD (Lancs or Cheshire). Have you tried looking in Scotland? or Isle of Man?

Using Freebmd (www.freebmd.org) for the death of a Peter Sweatman (all counties in E&W) between 1876 when he married Martha until 1930 found two results.
In Jun Q 1911 a 52 year old died in Salford Registration district and in December Q 1929 a Peter L. Sweatman died aged 0 in Northwich Registration District. Your Peter would heve been 62-ish in 1911 so maybe whoever registered his death didn't know how old he was.
However he may not have died in E&W as has already been suggested

Hi Welcome to Rootschat
I can't find a death either. Have you got any of the children's marriage certificates? I wondered if they indicated that the father was deceased

Ref the Salford death, another Peter Sweatman was born c1859, so I assume that is the one who died.

There is a death of a Peter Sweetman in Dublin in 1915 aged 69. Volume:2 Page: 385
It is possible that he left her and she just said that she was a widow.

Thanks for all the replies :)
I hadn't thought about checking the marriage certificates of his kids, I've only got one from 1913 and the only other child who got married was around 1901 so I might order that to see what it says.
I guess he could have left her.....I've sent my mother on a mission to the local graveyard to see if she can find Martha and Peter on a gravestone and then I might get my answer :)

Plenty of people were buried without headstones, or they have been removed in recent years, but the graveyard offices will have records of who was buried there and where. The council may be responsible for the graveyard now so it would be worth contacting them first, before you send your mother off "on spec". Searching a large municipal cemetery is both very slow and hard work trying to read all the different types of stone.

Thanks Alpine cottage, I'd already suggested to her about popping into the cemetery office first cos they would be able to direct her to the plot a lot quicker :) Great minds :)

Middlewich cemetery is looked after by Middlewich Town Council and Middlewich Heritage Society have transcribed all the burial records and will do a search for you. Their index shows that they have record (s) for the name Sweatman. Their website is at:
