Hi
I am looking for the following Stewart's from Frizington, Cumbria, England. Joseph William Stewart b 1888, Matthew Stewart b 1886 and Robert Stewart b 1884. They all appeared in the 1901 census but no trace of them after this apart from Robert who married in 1908 and no record of him from this date.

Could we ask, why are you looking on the Australia board? Is there some real reason that you presume they may have moved to here?
Neil
MODIFIED. There is a Joseph Stewart b 1892 formerly of Frizington residing at 2 Apr 1911 - Arlecdon, Cumberland, England in the 1911 census. ::)

Hi Neil
Many thanks fot your info.
The reason we are on the Australia board is that their great uncle emigrated there in 1913. Not sure if they followed.

Sorry Neil
The Robert you mentioned is from another family, not sure if they are related.#

Hi
It would be helpful if you type up the full name and arrival details for that 1913 migration and confirm that you know which state that chap setttled in. Otherwise it will be a tad like a needle in a haystack and your current threads about same search across several boards is a tad confusing to me.
Cheers JM

Sorry about that, brains not fully in gear yet.
Hawthorn Stewart and family sailed out of London on the Osterley on the 23 May 1913 and settled in Victoria (Kyabram area). He died around 1929.

The only thing that may separate them from all the other STEWART'S in Australia would be their parents names, do you have those please?
Neil
MODIFIED.....also Roberts wife's name

Just as for instance! there are deaths recorded just in one State NSW of 172 Robert Stewart's in the period 1910 - 1982 the extent of our available records. There are 5 other states and two territories as well :o

Dan, there’s a Hawthorn STEWART who was aged 85 when he died in 1929 in Victoria. The dc reference no. is 10369. The online index gives Hawthorn’s parents as Jno Stewart STEWART and Martha KY.
There is a marriage for a Hawthorn STEWART in Victoria in 1926. The reference No. is 13246.
Dan, the info on Victoria’s BDM is as good or better than Scotland’s. You can download Victoria BDMs immediately via your plastic card, and you can save some of the pennies if you already have the reference no. (I typed up TWO possibles earlier in this post).

This RChat thread gives you an excellent insight into what to expect on VIC BDMS

Also, Dan, You will also find a Mr Hawthorn STEWART, a Single Scotch Male ticketed to Melbourne, Australia on the “Ballaarat” departing London, England 28 August 1895.
Other sightings for you, possibly to help with your other threads on other boards
There is a Hawthorn STEWART, aged 4 MONTHS travelling as a passenger on the “California” from Glasgow to New York departing 11 Nov 1910. He was with Mrs STEWART, AGED 28, AND James aged 6, Henry aged 4, and David aged 3. They were all Scotch.
There is a Hawthorne STEWART, ('e'' in his given name !) a Farmer at Kurow in 1882 and 1893 and 1896 (Kurow is in New Zealand)

Here’s a link that may also be very helpful as it was prepared by one of our Moderators for the Australian Board. It is ***HOW TO REQUEST A LOOKUP*** http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=368728.0
I have not looked very far at all for your elusive STEWART family. The surname is very popular, as is STEWARD, STUART and other spelling variations that can be found in Australian indexes due to the accents of either the person providing the verbal information or the person recording the verbal information.
There is NO national BDM institution. Each State and territory has their own records, similarly they each have their own Parliaments which sit in the respective capital cities. All the state Parliaments have written constitutions, initially provided as 19th Century Acts of the English Parliament and so each State's Parliament (and their institutions including their BDM registries) pre-date the Federal parliament in Canberra. Excellent reply JM as per usual extremely thorough and informative ;D But........ ::) I would never presume to want to correct you, NO...not me....never, it's just that....umm, how shall I put this ???
The ergh people of umm Scotland refer to themselves as SCOTTISH or Scotsman or just Scot. Ergh, argh, never umm SCOTCH :-[.....That's sort of like a Single malt variety nice colour, beautiful flavour and really enjoyed by a majority of SCOTTISH people's. ::) Having been distilled there for some years now.
Now the Scottish people's may be WHISKEY drinkers and who am I to stop them, but we as Australians enjoy a nice COLD BEER on a hot summer day. We are known for our ability to whack down a few too. :-[ That's probably just the heat :P But I don't think we would want to be called BEER"S when Australian's or AUSSIES or even just People from down under suits us fine ;D
If you get my drift :-X
Neil ;D ;D ;D ;D

Good point Neil, but as I was transcribing from an official record, I typed the words up as I read them. SCOTCH is the heading on the printed form ;D and so Scotch is "wot I rote" and most likely the form was not designed by a Scotsman at all :) The list is copyright to the UK National Archives
ADD
Neil, I have just tried TROVE and keyed in "Scotch Emigrants"
Lots of returns including this one ;D http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/38345760 and this one http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/124564209
