I hope someone can help. I have worked my Jones ancestors back on IGI to "Thomas Jones or Perry" [sic] in West Tytherley.
On the Archer website there are two or three people descibed in the same way, and it looks like two generations with a questionable surname.
Does anyone know what is going on on the original records?

Hi
The Hampshire Marriage Index has this marriage ( 1660-1753 )
02 October 1705 at W/Tytherley
Thomas JONES
Margaret PRAGNELL
The Baptism Index has this Baptism (1660-1751 )
12 Oct 1706-William s Thomas aka PERRY
I can see no other entries of baptisms for Thomas and no other entries for Perry at W/Tytherley ???

When two names are recorded it does not necessarily mean that the name is questionable, but that the person was known by either name. It could be for a number of reasons - illegitimacy, adoption of step-father's name when mother remarried.

Many thanks to both !
But I have now had a further scan through IGI and have the following disparate entries:
Thomas Jones or Perry buried 1743 West Tytherley.
Thomas Jones or Perry m. 1752 West Tytherley to Mary Read.
William Jones b. 1706 son of Thomas Jones or Perry
Richard Jones b. 1752 son of Thomas Jones or Perry
Thomas Perry b. 1753 son of Thomas Jones or Perry
I am at a loss to see what is going on !
