Hi,
I have found some on-line Children Wards of State (Victoria) old sequence digitalized documents that can be downloaded on line. My problem is that I can't seem to find a application to view them. The application suggested by PROV is win/veo - which seems to be Windows only & I use a Mac.
Is there anyone out there who has worked out how to do this on a Mac (I run the current OS10.8)?
Or is there a very kind Windows person out there who could open the three documents for me?
All help welcome,
Regards
Trix

Would you like to give me the names and the link you are searching.
Found online....
All of the Ward Registers were 'imaged' during the 1990s.
Microfiche copies of the Ward Registers dated from 1864-1897 are available to the public and can be consulted at the State Library of Victoria, and at the Public Record Office Victoria, Victorian Archives Centre. These include information about 'neglected' children admitted up to 23 April 1895 and convicted children admitted up to 1897. There is also an index to the Ward Registers, covering 'neglected' children admitted up to 1894 and convicted children admitted up to 1897.
From 1898, the Registers had an internal index at the beginning of each volume.
Paper, copies are on microfiche
Access
Records more than 99 years old are open to the public at Public Record Office Victoria. For access to other records, contact Family Information Networks and Discovery, within the Department of Human Services.

Hi Cando,
I seem to be having a similar problem to Bron! I have found two children in book 1, & can download as a PDF, but they are very hard to read & I would like to download as a jpeg so that I can try & make the text darker! I can't work out how to change the download to jpeg?
The two boys I found are Charles Tootell b1862 & Stephen b1857. There are four other children Sarah b1855, Hannah b1859, Eliza b 1861 & James b1864.
I think their mother Ann remarried James? FINCH.
Their father Jacob TOOTELL seems to have deserted them & I haven't been able to find a death anywhere for him.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thank you.

Dear lynfour,
After Condo's very kind help (Thanks again!!), I have managed to get the Mac to open the files. I have so far converted your Charles Tootell file to jpeg & will work though the others. It is a bit fiddly & I have no idea how to do it on a regular Windows computer.
Could your PM (private message) me with your email so I can send Charles' file (which is incredibly faint!) in its jpeg & then can send the others you would like.
I'll also see if I can enhance Charles recors at all for you at my end,
Cheers

Bron has managed to download the entries for me. Very faint copies, so I will try to enhance them.

There are four other children Sarah b1855,
If this is your Sarah, then this seems to indicate he returned to England or perhaps he was from Nottinghamshire. I can't see a death in the UK.
The Argus 26 May 1904
Marriages
SMITH—TOOTELL.—On the 14th May, 1879, at St.Mary's R. C. Presbytery, by the Rev. Father England, William Henry Smith, native of Gotland, Sweden, youngest son of Charles Smith, to Sarah Ann, native of White Hills, Bendigo, eldest daughter of Jacob Tootell, of Nottinghamshire, England.

Edit Sarah's birth was registered Sandhurst in 1855 with father Jacob and mother Ann BISHOP.

lynfour you MAY gain further information from Ann's 2nd marriage certificate. It was the usual procedure to note the date the party was 'widowed' along with number of issue living and deceased, but then I doubt the minister bothered to check the accuracy of the details.

Thanks Cando,
Jacob TOOTELL was born in Nottinghamshire & came out with his brother John 1849.
Jacob was charged with deserting his wife & children & just seems to have disappeared. I have looked at deaths in England as well, but still no luck!
Something will turn up one day :)

It is possible that his surname has been mistranscribed and as he deserted his family he may have changed his name.
I gather you don't have Ann's 2nd marriage certificate.
The writing on the records is certainly difficult to read....I didn't bother with it however have you managed to decipher any of the words?
I found his arrival in SA along with his marriage but that doesn't help find his death.
Cheers

Hi,
I have managed to decipher some of the details on the entries.
Parents deserted, warrants issued, does this mean both parents?? Mother remarried to James FINCH, a labourer. They reside at Mt Macedon.
Sarah TOOTELL,Licensed out to a Mrs Rose DeLacey, husband a coachbuilder, March 1869.
Hannah & Stephen TOOTELL, discharged to their stepfather, 19th July 1870.
Eliza TOOTELL, died of consumption, 26th Oct 1865.
Charles TOOTELL, almost impossible to read !, but think it says he died.
No mention of James TOOTELL.
They are also listed under FINCH, the stepfathers name.
Is it possible to find out which institution they were in?
Lynne
