Hello,
There are only two records that I have managed to unearth for Auland (Anland) COX, born c1840 presumably in Derbyshire..........the Parkhurst Prison Register, the National Archives HO24/15, p.138 and the England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892 courtesy of Ancestry. His crime was burglary, sentenced at Derby Assizes on 14/03/1854 to 6 years penal servitude. He was received first at Millbank Prison London, transferred to Parkhurst Prison on 30/09/1854 and lastly removed to Portland Prison on 24/11/1857.
The christian name is correct, albeit with the possible alternative spellings, but despite researching all available on-line indexes that I can think of no further information has been retrieved.
Can anyone help please??
For the moment,
Tony Cocks

Where did the year of birth come from?
Was he therefore only 14 when the crime was committed? No age on Criminal record on Ancestry.
-
That's a really unusual name isn't it. Can't find anything but could it be Auland was his mothers maiden name or something :-\
-
1841 census has an Auland Walker, aged 1, on it
In Gedney, Lincolnshire
HO107 607 2
-
The age came from the Parkhurst Prison Register ( a copy of which I purchased many years ago).............there is no other information from the prison record that could be helpful other than he was a Weaver and could read only

This is all beginning to make sense.........Ashton-under-Lyne and Glossop are geographically neighbours, so the 1841 and 1851 Census details are very much in sequence. Now the challenge is from 1861 onwards!! And, of course, there is some adage about the "answer staring you in the face" and I had not conceived that my own surname "Cocks" may have a part to play!!! There's no fool etc.
Anyway, thank you for opening up the possible research options for me to follow.
For now,
Tony

Hi Tony,
it's looking promising. It looks like he is still there on the 1851 Whitfield census born in Ashton as Enland Cocks age 12 occ. weaver to me. There's a few with Enland as a surname in Lancs. on Familysearch, only a very few though. Maybe that's where it came from, it's intriguing.
Cheers Jo

Hello Jo and Trish,
I think I have exhausted all the variations of Auland COX, through Anland, Enland and Newland to COX, COCK and COCKS via Ancestry and FamilySearch, the only two indexes available to me.......at least I'm exhausted!! Google, Bing, Yahoo and AOL have also been offered the opportunity to help but, sadly, let me down.
So whither next?............hopefully not the pending tray.
For now,
Tony

Getting the birth cert to see exactly what his name was?
Following the rest of the family after 1851 to see where they went, what they did, and whether Anland(Yanland/Newland) was involved - eg a witness on a marriage, mentioned in a Will etc.?
-
There's a marriage in Hayfield which might be worth checking out in Dec 1888.
Groom Hugh Land Cox *
2 brides to choose from Elizabeth Proctor and Sarah Elizabeth Ashton.
With luck the 1891 census should help rule him out or not. I realise if he was yours he would be 50 when he married but worth a look.
* Ah there's a death in Glossop Sep 1926 for Hughland Cox age 62 so that could be the one that married in 1888 rather than yours.
Nope definitely not yours. This one married Sarah Elizabeth and was born Glossop 1865.
-
Thanks Milliepede,
Certainly your ideas opened some new avenues for me explore with variations on "Auland"........."Euland", from research derivations of "Hughland", was hopefully going to be a eureka moment but there was my old friend, the brickwall.
Never mind. The pending tray is becoming more and more inviting.
-
No no don't put it in the pending tray it will only gather dust.
I was looking for names *land but back to Hughland 1865 he appears to be the son of Edward and Ann Brough married 1861. They are lodging with mother in law Brough in 1871.
Unfortunately it is written Edward not Euland but he is born Ashton Lancs abt 1836 and dies age 36 in 1872.
And per family search marriage 1861 Ashton his father was Samuel Cox.
-
Just puuting the full details of that 1871 up , to save us all looking it up. I reckon this could well be him!

Ann Brough 65 widow Housekeeper bn Middleton Derbyshire
Edward Cox 35 son-in-law lodger Spinner cotton bn Ashton Lancs
Ann Cox dtr 33 frametenter bn Wirksworth Derbysh.
John W Cox 12 grandson
Hannah Cox 9 gdtr
Rowland Cox 6 gson
Sarah A Cox 4 gdtr children all bn Glossop
-
1881 very much confirms Millipedes findingfs.
Ann is a widow ( fitting with death of husband in 1872)
Eldest child (who was John W Cox age 12 in 1881) is now William Bruff, as he was born before the marriage ( which was found in 1861)
Child written as Rowland in 1871 is now Hughland (bn 1865ish)
RG 11 3458 46 37
Mill Street,Glossop
Ann 40 widow frametenter bn Wirksworth
William Bruff 22 cotton piecer bn Glossop
Hannah Cox 18
Hughland Cox 16
Sarah A Cox 14
-
One more snippet of info the marriage date for Edward and Ann was 1 Jan 1861 so they should be together as a couple on the 1861 census.
-
Thank you for all the information......I am most grateful.
Now to sit down quietly, jigsaw all the details and then produce a coherent whole of, hopefully, a young rapscallion who eventually made good. The anticipation of achieving this end is always the most satisfying part of the research.
Where's my chair??
For now
Tony

Welll maybe,
there is one of that name in 1901 on the New South Wales Census
Locality: Springmount
Sub-District: E Tilbuster
County: Sandon
District: Armidale
Source Citation: State Archives NSW; Series: NRS 685; Book: 5; Item: 2/8432; Fiche: 1014-1017.
It definitely says Enland on the schedule. A bit of googling has shown me that the Penal Servitude Act 1853 substituted penal servitude for transportation, but I'm no expert. Unfortunately there is only a paltry amount of info on the census.
Cheers Jo
