Title: Photograph of headstone in St Marys, St Marychurch
Post by: kiwipom on Sunday 22 September 13 03:56 BST (UK)
Hi
Is there anyone who could locate and photograph a headstone in St Marys at St Marychurch?
My Gt Gt Grandfather was John Algate, born in Wembury but lived for many years in Furrough Cross, St Marychurch.
As a child during the '50's we spent our holidays in St Marychurch and I can remember my Grandmother telling me her Grandfather was buried there, as a 5-9 year old I didn't give it much thought but now it is of interest and would be gratefully received.
I can remember waiting for the bus into Babbacombe or Torquay outside St Marys.
Thanks
TonyE

Managed to find the gravestone today, but it looks like part is missing, the Inscriptions done in the 1970's says:-
424.   Sacred to the  memory of  /  Ada ALGATE  / wife of Frederick
ALGATE  /  died 26th  July 1943 /  Aged 71 years /  Frederick
ALGATE  / died 24th  April 1951  / Aged 79 years /  Also John
ALGATE  / died February 11th  1908 /  also Susan wife of the
above /  Died September 9th  1913 /  Aged 80 years
Unfortunately the bit you're interested in is missing.

Terry so many thanks for your efforts once again. Well I wonder if this headstone was damaged when the Church suffered damage during WW2.
You have increased my family knowledge tho', I now know Gt Uncle Fred was married, most of his life he was a seaman but he died at home in Petitor Road.
Thank you once again Terry I appreciate your help
