I have my grandfathers service record. He enlisted in 16th Lancers in 1889, serving in India from 1890-1897. I believe they were stationed at Lucknow. From what I have been able to find, they didn't see any action during this period. So what I would like to know is what did they actually do during this time? Can anyone suggest any sources, books, diaries or anything else which may give some information? I have been in touch with the Queens Royal Lancers museum, and they have been unable to help. Would appreciate any suggestions.

There are dozens of books available detailing the history of the 16th Lancers. One of the cheapest is this - http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?ac=sl&st=sl&ref=bf_s2_a1_t2_2&qi=AK8E19x41g0lyHp.6csnh3Z.1NE_1666499960_1:1727:16264&bq=author%3Djames%2520lunt%26title%3Dscarlet%2520lancers
However during the period in question, as you say, they did not do much. So it may be glossed over in a few lines. Basically the British army was in India to ensure India stayed British.
There are other books available. But most cover years when they were engaged in fighting. So you need to careful and check the period covered.
You could also try an online newspaper archive. These will have snippets of news.
