Title: Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers
Post by: Vicki Morley on Wednesday 18 September 13 23:41 BST (UK)
My grandad fought in this regiment in WW2. Although he never said why he joined them, my dad is convinced that to serve with them, you had to have Irish (well, Northern I would guess) ancestry.

Is this true?  Ive gone back about 4 generations in most directions from grandad and haven't found a connection to Ireland.

All regiments were a mix of English, Scottish, Irish and welsh. Before ww1 some Territorial regiments such as the Liverpool Scottish required a link with Scotland. But not in the Regular army.
