Post by: Peterjay on Sunday 15 September 13 16:49 BST (UK)
James Scott b1819 Sheffield d1909 Chelmsford, his wife was a Mary Jane and they were married 5 May 1840 Sheffield (I think her maiden name is Crookes but not sure) can you confirm for me, also I cannot find a death date for Mary Jane Scott.(wife)
They had a daughter Clara G Scott born circa 1853 Sheffield, there was also a son to the marriage who died very young and I would like to find details of him name birth death if possible.
Kind regards.
Peter.
P.S I already have the details of James from British newspapers online

married 5 May 1840 Sheffield (I think her maiden name is Crookes but not sure) can you confirm for me

The problem is, sometimes to find other information you have to look at the whole picture.

And knowing the correct registration district is always a help.  :) :)

Not sure how you'll ever find this out - have had great trouble locating on the census and when I did find them they were less then helpful with their birthplaces (one just stating England).

They were continually on the move so the child could have been born anywhere.   I note they had an older daughter too - Frances E. Scott bc.1851 Manchester (incorrectly shown as 25 in 1851).    She must be the Frances Emily born Sept.qtr.1850 Chorlton.   If Clara indeed born Sheffield there are only 2, one born Jun.qtr.1852 and the other Jun.qtr.1854.   Both just plain Clara.   Can't find them in 1861 and in 1871 they are in Northumberland.  Clara herself married in Durham.   In 1881 James, Mary and Frances all in Brotton, Yorkshire and all shown with wrong ages!!

Mary married and appears on census as plain Mary so probably death recorded as plain Mary too (rather than Mary Jane).   Can't find James in 1891 so Mary must have died 1881 to 1901.

Can't see baptisms for either of the 2 known daughters so how you are going to find a son that died young I have absolutely no idea.

Hello and thanks,
I did not know of the 2nd daughter birth that's a new one, have found the 1881 details which puts both of their births as 1831 my apologies for stating 1819 for James birth 1831 would be correct.
Shame about the little by son born to the marriage (cannot find), would have thought they should be on 1841 census, James wife died suddenly on stage with him from a heart attack, and James little son was accidentally poisoned on stage, some poison in a bottle having been left there and the little lad drank it.
Kind regards,
Peter

You are wrong about being bc.1831 not 1819.    Age on 1881 census wrong.    How could they marry in 1840 if only born 1831????

there are lots of newspaper reports re Clara Scott's acting career - she was in Guernsey for a while.

Where did you find the middle initial G - and where did you find mother Mary's middle name to be Jane ?

Might help in our search

Did Clara Scott really have middle initial G - or did she acquire it on her marriage to James Guiver Clover (mentioned in the actor's obituary)? She's just Clara Scott in the marriage index (Mar qtr 1874 Durham).

If Clara indeed born Sheffield there are only 2, one born Jun.qtr.1852 and the other Jun.qtr.1854.   Both just plain Clara.

The latter of these registrations may be attributable to the Clara Scott born 2 Apr 1854, baptised 18 June 1854 at St Peter & St Paul, Sheffield, daughter of John (a grinder) and Harriet, abode Park.

Hi,
With regard to Mary Jane consider this as an error on my part and use plain Mary, with regard to her death it is as follows:
DAUGHTER BORN AND WIFE ANS SON DIE ON STAGE
"and with such wide experience many incidents have occurred to you" "Yes I had one daughter born in the old Adelphi Theatre, and a little son poisoned on the stage "Poisoned?" "Yes accidentally. Some poison was left in a bottle on the stage, and the little lad picked it up and drank some of the contents. But the saddest incident was the death of my wife. She died on the stage. We were acting together in the play 'Maria Martin,' at Bethesda in Wales"

This is copied from an article in newspaper I cannot post as a JPG because for some reason this thread will allow me, and the G in Clara G could very well be Guiver, the attached link shows a little more about this family.

A Bethesda death would have been registered in Bangor.

Have you ruled out this one?

Death, Dec qtr 1884

Mary SCOTT, 64

Bangor 11b 345
