Title: Nicholson Lookup
Post by: kelz29 on Sunday 15 September 13 16:08 BST (UK)
Hi all, im looking for some help with my 2nd Great Grandfather, heres what i have......

John Nicholson b.1833 in Wighill, Yorkshire.

m. Sarah Eliza Hall (aged 19) in 1873 (lists his father as James Nicholson)

John and Sarah went on to have 13 children.

But that is all i have, i cant find anything on John Nicholson's birth and i cant find him on the 1841, 51, 61 or 71 census. I have no idea who his mother was either!?

Any help would be much appreciated :)

Hi
There's a family tree with him on.  No mother but father given as James Penman Nicholson 1808-1869 so there's a name to look for on census to see if he could be yours.

There is a wife for James P Elizabeth Berwick but I assume she wasn't his mother  ???
Children are listed from the marriage starting 1835 and all Northumberland so really don't know if he was father before he married.  No marriage date given.

 Christening Date: 10 Sep 1826
 Christening Place: WIGHILL,YORK,ENGLAND

 Father's Name: James Nicholson

This looks like John Nicholson born Wighill and living in Rothwell, with his parents in 1851 :

HO107/2316, Folio 383, Page 21

When searching it's best not to include his year of birth.

Kind regards,

Thank goodness you have found this likely death. I was getting worried  :)

1881 has Ada Beckwith and husband with brother John Nicholson living in Wigginton, York

Thanks for all the help i am going to start looking in to all these possibilities, one thing that has me worried though is the ones found for 1826! I know sometimes census's can be a year or two out but this seems like such a large gap and all census's 1881 onwards have him as 1833 and his marriage in 1873 has him as 40 years old!?
I did assume that at this age of marriage the likelihood was he had been married previously.

And in regards to the last comment on an Ada Beckwith and husband having a John Nicholson (brother) living there, i have the 1881 census for John living with his "2nd" wife and children, however what makes this curious is my Great Grandfather (son of John) is John Beckwith Nicholson!

Also i forgot to mention i cannot find the 1891 census for him, i have his family (wife and children) but hes not there, then he reappears again in 1901 census

I have seen where a family name, in this case John, is used for children of the same father but different mothers.
It might be that Ada's husband was a godparent or that they just liked the name Beckwith since it came into the family!

very true i just noticed that on the 1901 census!

And although the 1881 census with ada would explain where there name Beckwith came from and i have to admit its too much of a coincidence to be looked over the John Nicholson (brother) living with her is far too young and i already have the 1881 census for him! Its all so confusing!

1861 Census.
John Nicholson 35
Sarah Nicholson 45
Ellen Nicholson 11
John Nicholson 7
Ada Nicholson 6
George Nicholson 24
 RG 9/3630/28; p: 3

Here are Ada (Beckwith) and her brother John Nicholson.
In 1881 she is 26yrs and he is 28 yrs.

I don't understand your reference to 1881 and being too young. John Beckwith Nicholson, her half brother, isn't born ntil 1889 (ish).

Providing this is the right one - John's death registration claims he was born approx 1829/1830 :

Death, Jun qtr 1908
John Nicholson, aged 78

Sorry completely my mistake, because i only have the children from the 2nd marriage and none from the 1st i was assuming we were talking about John senior being the brother of Ada (as i have none of his siblings either) but now i see John senior had technically 2 sons he named John, one in each marriage.

Yes that's right.
davidft posted the 1861 and 1871 information with the children from the first marriage.
