Title: Germany, John Fritz
Post by: Fritz27 on Sunday 15 September 13 12:23 BST (UK)
Hi Everybody

I am researching my family tree, my Great Great Grandfather, John Fritz, according to census records, was born in Germany about 1811.
The only other information I have, he lived in Islington, he was a baker, married to Elizabeth.
Not much to go on I know but any suggestions how I can trace where in Germany he was born and when he came to the UK.

Thanks

Nick

As you have it it's definitely not enough.
Start with as much info as you can get in the UK:

1. When/where did he marry Elizabeth? What was her maiden name?
2. If you do not know the above - when was the first child born? Were any kids born after the start of civil birth registration? Do you have/could you acquire a certificate?
3. Which censuses does he appear on? How consistent is he about age/birthplace? Are there any other German immigrants in the household or on the same street? Any other Fritz families in the same area? (links with people from the same village/town were sometimes maintained after they immigrated)
4. Any variants/misspellings of the name the family used? (or that were used for them when the locals had trouble spelling names).

This should help narrow down when he arrived (at least, did he arrive before the 1841 census?)
