I am trying to find further details relating to Lawrence Morris Johnson born about 1869 in Kristiana, Norway. He emigrated to Australia before 1894 as this is when he married in South Australia. Lawrence died aged 84 years on May 19, 1953. This makes his birth year around 1869. On his marriage record it states that his father is John Johnson.
Shortly after his marriage Lawrence did go to Queensland for several years and he then returned to South Australia. He then spent time in Broken Hill working in the mines. I have read somewhere that he was an engineer.
If possible I would like to find out who his parents are, when he was actually born and when he came to Australia.

I have found this site useful but I can't see Lawrence at the moment

The spelling of the name as you have it is not Norwegian therefore conducting a search using that spelling will not help. In Norwegian Lawrence is spelt: Lorentse, Lorents. Johnson also appears with the alternate spelling of: Johnsen. Hope that helps.

Thank Kay99 and tp0121 for your help. I think I have come across Johnsen being used as Laurence's surname. It does not help that he married a person with the surname Johnson.

Search for: L M Johnson naturalisation
should be one hit in 1925.
He gives his name as "Laurence Maurice Johnson", b. Oct 31 1868, Christiania. He gives his father's name as John Gullbrensen. His mother was also Norwegian (name not given). He arrived in Australia from San Francisco in 1890 on the SS Alameda, arriving into Sydney. (exact date not given). He had resided "all over" but in Broken Hill from 1910. He had not left Australia since his arrival.
Details of wife Hannah and three kids are given (confirming it is him).
He apparently had applied for naturalisation in Adelaide soon after his arrival (says "35 years ago") and thought he was naturalised.
Now, from this we can guess that his father's is probably Johan or Jens Gulbrandsen, but I'm having trouble pinning him down.

Wow! Thank you so much jorose. I have all the children and details relating to Laurence's wife and children but did lack details about Laurence. Thank you so much. I have managed to find 2 children who died, one in Adelaide and one in Queensland.
Kay99, I have looked at the site you recommend but find this a bid difficult to navigate.

- here he is (as Morris Johnson) on the Alameda in October 1890. If he was only supposed to crew to Sydney or if he jumped ship - not sure.
Some seamen's registers are online:

(looks like there are indexes but they're not properly alphabetical).

Thank you jorose. I did manage to find the original image of Laurence on the Alameda on Ancestry. You are correct in that he was listed as Morris. Have had a quick look on the second site but will need to spend some time looking through this. Hopefully will be able to find something relating to Laurence.
Thank you once again for your continued help.

Ah, found him!
The trick is to look for a number at Register nr. 1 (1866-1891) under Oslo sjømannskontor and then find that number by clicking through to "Oslo mønstringskontor" (sidebar) which is this link:
http://arkivverket.no/arkivverket/Digitalarkivet/Om-Digitalarkivet/Om-kjeldene/Sjoeinnrullering/Oslo-moenstringskontor
In the index there is a Lars Marius Johnsen, no 2506, and he can be seen here:
http://arkivverket.no/URN:db_read/db/42068/124/
Note - same birthdate as on the naturalisation records. :)

Thank you so much jorose. In such a few hours you have found things that would take me years to discover. I am extremely grateful for all the time and effort you have taken to find this information.
