Title: Battle of Waterloo
Post by: Su on Wednesday 15 June 05 17:42 BST (UK)
I'm not sure if I'm on the right board or not.  I am looking for information on Thomas Holding born Dumbarton,Scotland in 1787.  He was in Woolwich, Kent when his son John was born.  I would really like to know which regiment he would have been in, a Scots one I should think.  Also which battles, the Napoleonic wars were on - the battle of Waterloo was 1815, and I think he served in that, and also served in America.

There was another son William born about 1816 in Cheshire.  Thomas was given a Chelsea pension, but as an 'out' pensioner, never actually lived in the hospital.  Any information would be super, as if I can find what regiment he was in, I can go about finding his army records as he was on this pension.  He must have been posted at some time in Cheshire, and then in Woolwich.

Many thanks
Su

He could have been in Woolwich for two reasons...

1) He was in the Royal Artillery.

2) He was in another regiment and was being transported abroad by going through the docks at Woolwich. Or was perhaps billeted in the area.

If he served in America then it is most likely he fought in the War of 1812 between Britain and the United States. This is a good website http://www.warof1812.ca/charts/regts_na.htm that gives details of the various regiments that served in the Americas at that time.

Hope this helps...

Su,

Go to:

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=topics.Military.uk.britarmy&maxrows=25&dir=next&cur=211

and you will see on the postings for 28th Dec last a post by Mike Ryko. He says he has a database of all British soldiers who took part in this battle and will do free lookups...

Hope you find your man.

Valda,
A huge thank you as your reply turned out to be the correct Thomas Holding.

Is there any way I can find out from his army records if he served in the American war, the Napoleonic War and the Battle of Waterloo (tried the Mike Ryko site Leofric, but it has 'collapsed' unfortunately and I can't contact him for Waterloo). Thomas Holding was injured in one of them, hence becoming an out Chelsea Pensioner.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to the Armed Forces I'm afraid.

Thank you again
Su

Hi Mack
Thanks for the reply.

Thomas Holding's son William was born in Hatton (Warrington area) in 1815.  I think there was a Barracks there at some time, but don't know if Thomas was billeted there or perhaps Chester?  I need to find out if the Royal Artillery were billeted at Warrington or Chester, and which one he was at.

His son John was born at Woolwich 1819, so did he go abroad to war during the missing four years?  If so where to?

He had another son Elias who emigrated to America, so wonder if that had anything to do with his father fighting there.

Any information would be a great help in tracing Thomas's
military career.

Many thanks
Su

This is the page with the search for Thomas Holding's attestation papers held at the National Archives
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/searchresults.asp?SearchInit=0&txtsearchterm=thomas+holding&txtfirstdate=&txtlastdate=&txtrestriction=&hdnsorttype=Reference&image1.x=30&image1.y=7

Soldiers who served sufficient time to gain a pension (and therefore their attestation papers survive) have been indexed up to 1854 and can be found in the National Archives catalogue. If you cannot get to the National Archives at Kew yourself you can email them and see if they will photocopy Thomas' papers. His career can also be followed through the muster or quarterly pay lists, so you would know exactly where he was stationed each quarter of his career. You could only access these books yourself at Kew or pay a researcher to do it for you. Thomas' attestation papers will give you an overview of where he was throughout his career.

This is the page for the National Archives research guides
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/researchguidesindex.asp

you will find some useful information on researching soldiers under British army.
The reference to Thomas Holding's attestation papers seems to indicate he was discharged from the army in 1818. As he was only 29 it is very possible he was invalided out of the service.
