Hi,
Could sks please help me identify the family for:
Joseph William MASON, born 1834 North Shields
Parents: William MASON, ships captain and Mary KING.
Parents are also believed to have resided in Northumberland but not certain
Those above details on the parents have come from Josephs' marriage certificate and death records (both in Vic Australia)...but these may not be accurate.
He married Elizabeth WATTS in Melbourne on 24/7/1867 (second marriages for both) but stated on that Certificate he was a widower and that his first wife (no details known) had died in Dec 1854 (not stated where) - they had one child from that marriage (sex and name not stated) but the declaration stated the child was deceased prior to 1867. Have no information other than that.
I could find no record of the first marriage in Victoria, nor his first wife's death so assumed they occurred in Northumberland prior him migrating...am yet to obtain migration records but it's believed he migrated about 1855 (also unconfirmed).
Quite possible the first marriage occurred in Northumberland but I'm having difficulty finding that along with Joseph's birth and also his parents details so any help in tracking down this family in North Shields would be greatly appreciated along with any suggestions as to where I can look next..... ???.....Thanks.........Tom

I wonder if this could be his first marriage in 1854 to Sarah Jane Blakey

The only William and Mary with a Joseph of the right age that I can see in 1841 in that area the father is a coal miner. Not impossible to change or may the ship's captain was a bit of exaggeration?
HO107 313 15.171 9 in Wingate. May be a complete red herring though. North Shields is on the Tyne and a stone's throw away from Durham. People regularly crossed the river.
Edit - that family are all still together in 1851 by which time Joseph is also a miner so probably not yours.
Have you looked for a William Mason on Lloyd's Captains' list?
That marriage looks very good and he is still north of the river then. www.freebmd.org.uk will give the reference if you want to get the certificate.

Was Joseph William also a sailor and therefore may have been at sea in 1851? Sarah Jane Blakey born 1838 North Shields appears still to be living there in 1851 with her mother and step father John Lough who was also a mariner Class: HO107 Piece 2409 Folio 442 Page 11
Edit - there is a tree on Anc. that lists her marriage to Joseph in 1854, her working in North Shields as a servant in 1861 - listed as married - and her marriage to George Scrimshaw in 1865 in the name of Blakey. There is one child listed to the first marriage Mary Ann Kell Mason born 1858 dies 1867 - who is living as grandaughter Mary A Kell in 1861 with Sarah Jane's mother Mary Ann Lough

Sillgen...
Yes I saw that reference also but the Joseph was still there after my Joseph was in Australia so I don't think that's them.... tks all the same
Kay,
...I am not familiar with the area and proximity to North Shields and that makes it difficult to identify each listing in the census...regarding the occupation of the father as Sea Captain, have looked at some military sources but not found anything - not looked at Maritime records nor the Captains register yet so thanks for that advice....the sons marriage reference states quite clearly his mother was Mary King and I had been trying to reconcile the parents with Joseph in the census to track them down
Thank you both, appreciate your help and suggestions....Tom

Kay,
That marriage you found on IGI seems to be quite close....I'll try and get copy of the film next week to see but it does seem to fit with the mothers maiden name KING in Joseph's name....my information did not have his name including King as it wasn't mentioned in any material so now I'll look for the death for confirmation as well........thankyou

I wouldn't think this would be the same as the one who has a will in 1850,unless they renewed them automatically

Tks Radcliff and Kay99,
It's a start and gives me something to work on...I appreciate your help..as yet, haven't been able to access the films but hopefully in the next week or so and that may prove a link or discount him. In the meantime I am looking at the Maritime aspect but that's proving just as difficult....but am confident we'll sort him out and am grateful for your input.....

Have you not found his arrival in Australia, the Victoria archives have a couple of Masons arriving ,
also William the mariner I mentioned in the previous post was apprenticed in 1815,to the ship Jane, and travelled to Jamaica as well as around the coast of England,he seemed to be at sea most of his life,
