Title: New help decrypting Army records
Post by: quinnw on Thursday 12 September 13 08:37 BST (UK)
Hi

I'm trying to decipher the attached army records. On WO97-3699-104-004-QUINN_THOMAS I am trying to understand the hand writing below the square box on the left hand side. It has dates from 72 to 93 which we would like to understand what they are about.

On WO97-3699-104-005-QUINN_THOMAS we are trying to understand the bottom quarter, where stationed, diseases, etc.

Finally on WO97-3699-104-006-QUINN_THOMAS we are trying to understand Thomas' medical history.

All help apreciated, many thanks in advance.

Bill

On WO97-3699-104-004-QUINN_THOMAS I am trying to understand the hand writing below the square box on the left hand side. It has dates from 72 to 93 which we would like to understand what they are about.

I think these entries refer to repeated refusals by the pensions board to extend Thomas QUINN's pension. The numbers are probably reference numbers in the letter-books. The comments would relate to the replies that were sent to him ('to man') on each occasion, up to 1893.

Bottom right, it looks like he was given 8 pence per day for 18 months (final). His record shows that he was invalided out in August 1870, and the first entry here is dated January 1872, which would have been just before the pension was due to end.

On 23 Aug 1872 - 'not by Service according to Med(ical) Rep(or)t therefore cannot grant further pens(io)n.' This would relate to his disability not being caused directly by his army service.

On 20 May 1878 - 'useless', suggesting that he was told that it was useless to continue reapplying.

If you ask a Moderator to move this thread to the Armed Forces board you might get some more informed replies?

Can you post the link to the record or give his DoB and regiment?
