My GGGGg was John Breakspear a Cordwainer who I found living in London from the mid 1700's. I can find no record of his birth in London but what I have found is a document dated 13th March 1788 granting him to be admitted into the freedom of the City of London in the Company of Musicians. Written on this Document it says that he is the son of Richard Breakspear late of Whitney Oxfordshire Vict deceased. Was John born in Whitney?
I would be grateful if anyone can give me any further information about John or Richard.
Many Thanks
Val

Hi Val
When do you think he was born ?
I can find only this one at Witney which might fit

Marriage-27 December 1742 ( at Witney )
Richard BREAKSPEAR
Ann BIRDSEYE
(no other info )

Hello Kim
Thank you for your quick reply. I do think these are my Breakspears. John I reckoned was born in the1740s. This would tie in with his parents marriage in 1742. John's first married was in 1767, he would have been in his early twenties.
Thank you once again Kim for finding that missing brick in my wall.
Do you know if Richard and Ann had any other children?.
Best wishes
Val
p.s. Love the name Birdseye.

Try again !
These are the only other Breakspear baptisms I can find for Richard and Ann
18 Mar 1746-Mary
20 Sept 1751-William
27 May 1711-Richard Breakspear s Edward
Buriels
26 Aug 1755-Mary Breakspear d Richard & Ann
17 May 1764-Ann Breakspear
I cannot see a baptism for Ann Birdseye but will look again !
I cannot see a buriel for Richard or a marriage for Edward Breakspear-but someone with the OFHS Marriage Index may be able to help :)

Hello Kim
I too have problems losing work through cyber space.
It looks as if poor John had only one surviving sibling. Ann who died in 1764 may have been his mother. Do you think that Richard could be the son of Edward as the date of birth is 1711?.
Once again Kim thank you for spending time looking up the answers to my queries.
Best wishes

I cannot see ........... a marriage for Edward Breakspear-but someone with the OFHS Marriage Index may be able to help :)
The only Edward in the index before 1711 is:
Edward BREAKSPEARR (sic) , who married Elizabeth COLESWOOD on 11 October 1705 at Cornwell (near Chipping Norton).
Cornwell PRs are on OFHS CD CN02, which unfortunately I don't have. Hope this helps.

Hello Kim and Carol
Thank you both for the look ups. Edward and Elizabeth could be Richard's parents. I will purchase the C.D. for Canwell just to be sure. Could you please, if possible, look up to see if Richard had any siblings.
Once again Thank you. Your help has been invaluable.

No other records for either Edward Breakspear or Elizabeth Coleswood at Cornwell, they seem to have just married there.
Their marriage record is exactly as Carol stated, no witnesses or parents or jobs.

Hi Val
There does not appear to be any more baptisms for children of Edward-just Richard in 1711.
There is a note to say there is a gap in the registers from May 1716 to March 1719 :(
OFHS has a Baptism Index which can be searched ( for a small fee !) details on thier website.

Many thanks Kim and Artifis.
Will contact OFHS for a search through Baptisms. In the meantime will see if I can find out more about Ann Birdseye.
Best Wishes to you both

Don't forget to look at the BREAKSPEAR/BIRDSEYE marriage licenses listed on
http://www.whipple.org/oxford/2_alpha_by_grooms_names.pdf (http://www.whipple.org/oxford/2_alpha_by_grooms_names.pdf)
http://www.whipple.org/oxford/4_alpha_by_brides_names.pdf (http://www.whipple.org/oxford/4_alpha_by_brides_names.pdf)
They often give clues as to which parishes to look for particular surnames.
Look at the wills also. A possible PCC one is here:-
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D573224 (http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D573224)
and there will be more held at the Oxon Records Office at Cowley, Oxford.
