Title: McAfee Family in Aghadowey
Post by: Gmcafee on Tuesday 10 September 13 13:01 BST (UK)
My husbands Grandfather Daniel McAfee born 11 July 1877 Aghadowey, Married Elizabeth O'Reilly of Garvagh on 10 April 1913.  His parents William McAfee and Mary Ann McGraw married on 15 November 1868.  He had 3 brothers all born in Aghadowey John 3 April 1869, William 2 June 1872 and James 6 April 1874 and 1 sister Mary born 22 Feb 1876.

Daniel had two children Patrick and Mary before leaving Ireland. In 1920 he came back for his wife and children and move to New York City.  In 1921 my husbands father was born.  In 1922 Daniel Died.

I am looking for information on what happened to the brothers and sister, and any family prior to William and Mary Ann.

Thanks so much aghadowey!

I did have some of this information,  but was not sure how it all went together.  I had Elizabeth McAfee married to James McCoy.  When Dan's (my husband) Grandfather Daniel first came to New York in 1912 he stayed with a William J. McCoy a cousin.  I also see a John (possible brother of Daniel) staying with same cousin in 1900 and I see no other information on John.  I was guessing because I saw a Elizabeth McAfee married to a James McCoy.

aghadowey, I can not thank you enough for all this information.  I would like to find out more about the dear friend,  the McAfee who is still in Aghadowey.  I know my husband would love to meet a relative on our trip to Aghadowey next year.

I see James, his wife Jane and the seven children moving to Canada and staying with brother William.  I was not sure if they were Daniel's brothers.  I also see a John going to New York in 1898 staying with cousin William J. McCoy.  He is in 1900 Census, but nothing else.  Do you know what happened to him and Mary the sister.

I'm useless with the McAfee info, but my great grandmother was Elizabeth (Lily) McAfee married McCloskey. My McAfees were from Drumcroon, and I'm certain that James McAfee, the blacksmith was my gg grandfather or else ggg grandfather. My grandmother died long before I was born, wondering if anyone has any further information?

I realise I'm a little bit late replying! I was working back through our tree (my mother was a McAfee), and reached my great grandfather John McAfee.  His death from tuberculosis in 1911 was certified by his sister Lizzie Orr.  Looking at the 1911 census, the Orr household included grandmother Rose McAfee, a widow aged 69, Roman Catholic, born Co Derry.
Going back to the 1901 census, Rose McAfee, a widowed seamstress aged 60, Roman Catholic born Co Derry, is living with daughter Mary and son-in-law James Alexander.  Looking at the marriage certificate of Mary and James, Mary's father was called James.  And the only marriage I can find of a James McAfee to a Rose is the same one listed by aghadowey - James W. McAfee marrying Rose Mullan on Christmas Day 1864.

Thank you!  I've realised (after a lot of fruitless searching for the intervening generation) that Rose was in fact Lizzie's mother, not her grandmother.  The 1911 census entry describes Rose as "grandmother", but the age difference from Lizzie is only 22 years.

... Looking at the marriage certificate of Mary and James, Mary's father was called James ...

A transcript I can see of the St. Malachy's record of that marriage on 13 October 1900 identifies both parents for bride and groom, namely:

- James Alexander: Son of Hugh Alexander and Lizzie Crossley
- Mary McAfee: Daughter of James McAfee and Rose Mullan

Hi, I am new to roots chat and ancestry search. I am so pleased to see this information about the McAfee family as James McAfee and Rose Mullan are my Great Great Grandparents. Their daughter Mary McAfee married James Alexander 13 October 1900 (my Great Grandparents). Their daughter Mary Alexander born 20 September 1902 is my Grandmother. I knew my Grandmother, she lived to 97 (passed away 27 Dec 1999) but I don't know anything of the family history. Visited Aghadowey recently in search of family graves but was unsuccessful - grateful for any help in locating these or for any family information anyone can provide :)

I have a note that says William McAfee (died 1877) & wife Jane (d.1897) might be buried in Agivey which is quite overgrown now but there isn't a headstone, or at least a legible one, for McAfees as far as I could tell when I was there years ago.
